In the height of summer, the cobblestone streets are often highly busy due to the abundance of traditional restaurants and lakeside cafés. Ohrid was previously renowned as a "Jerusalem of the Balkans" due to its abundance of religious architecture. Climate in Ohrid
Ohrid has a Mediterranean climate, verging on an oceanic climate due to the impact of the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea. Because of this, summers are cooler and winters are warmer than what is typical of cities with a similar climate. It rains most often throughout the winter, however, snow is an uncommon occurrence. Culture
The town of Ohrid, which lies on the lake's banks, is one of Europe's oldest inhabited centres. St. Pantelejmon, the oldest Slav monastery, was built there between the 7th and 19th centuries, and it also has more than 800 icons in the Byzantine style that date from the 11th to the 14th centuries. Three locations in the lake's shallow waters are evidence of ancient pile houses, and on the nearby Lin Peninsula are the remnants of a church that was established in the year 600.

Admire the Church of St John and its location
The Church of St John is an Orthodox church located on a hillside overlooking Lake Ohrid near Kaneo Beach. A narrow route through the trees from the Main Square leads to Samoil's Fortress, named for Tzar Samoil. He most likely constructed and expanded the castle in the early 11th century on an older location going back to at least the 4th century BC. It is a massive mediaeval structure with 18 defensive towers, 4 gates, and a 1.9-mile long wall that is 10 to 16 m high throughout the middle portion with ramparts towards the lake. The castle was destroyed many times by the Romans, Byzantines, Slavs, and Ottoman Turks, but was rebuilt and expanded each time.
