Once a member of the Hanseatic League trading and defensive confederation and a powerful city in charge of its own affairs, Groningen has been a trailblazing metropolis for centuries. Its distinctive Martinitoren church steeple dates from the 15th Century, the university was founded in 1614 and it endured intense fighting during World War II.
