Scandicci is so close to Florence that you might be fooled into thinking it’s a suburb, but there’s more to this pint-sized town than meets the eye. Surrounded by parks, woods and green hills, the town is packed with pretty churches, shops, bars and restaurants. Many choose to use the town as a base to explore Florence (which is only 20 minutes away) and Tuscany’s most famous sights, but there’s plenty to keep visitors within the confines of the town walls too.

Guide of Scandicci

Geography

Scandicci is a town in Tuscany located six kilometres southwest of Florence. It sits on the banks of the River Arno, nestled between tiny villages and rolling hills.

Climate in Scandicci

Scandicci has a typically Mediterranean climate, with a mild short winter and warm summers. The coldest month in Scandicci is January, with average low temperatures of 3°C and highs of 10°C. The hottest month of the year is July, when temperatures average highs of 30°C and lows of 18°C.

If you’re hoping to avoid rain, November is the wettest month, with an average of 9.3 days of rain throughout the month. The best months to visit Scandicci are May, June and September, when temperatures are warm but not overbearing.

Culture

According to locals, Scandicci takes its name from the Latin ‘scandare’ (to go up), which alludes to its original hilltop location. Since the 12th century, the town’s history has been intertwined with the nearby Settimio’s Abbey. More recently, the area has become renowned for its leather manufacture. Some of the biggest names in fashion, including Gucci and Prada, have large sites here.

Things To Do in Scandicci

Visit the fourteenth-century Castello dell’Acciaiolo

Castello dell’Acciaiolo is Scandicci’s most famous attraction. Commissioned by the Rucellai family in the 14th century, the castle passed between various Florentine families before it came into the hands of the Gentile family. It’s a beautiful structure, with battlements, two great towers, a chapel and beautifully 17th-century gardens. The venue regularly hosts summer concerts, shows and exhibitions.

Enjoy a picnic in the Parco di Poggio Valicaia

This green oasis, located just outside the town, is the perfect spot for a picnic. The 50-hectare space is a favourite with local families and couples, who come here for clean air and relaxation. There are picnic tables and barbecues, around 5 kilometres of trails and a sprawling lake. More recently, the park has acquired a number of impressive installations and sculptures, from artists like Dario Bartolini, Italo Zuffi, Maria Dompe and Valentino Moradei. Visitors can book a guided tour or workshop to learn more about the local flora and fauna too.

Take a trip to Mosciano

The traditional village of Mosciano is less than a five-minute drive or a 20-minute walk away, making it one of the easiest day trips from Scandicci. It’s best known for the tiny Church of Sant’Andrea, which houses 13th-century frescoes by Corso di Buono and a 13th-century panel of the Madonna by Mandredino d’Alberto.

Brush up on local history at the Museum of Palaeontology and Mineralogy

This fascinating museum houses an exceptional collection of artefacts, with paleontological pieces founded by local volunteers and a collection of minerals donated by the Pellegatta family. The crowning jewel is a nine-metre-long whale skeleton – the largest of its kind ever found in Europe.

Hit the fair

Founded in 1866 as a cattle fair, the Scandicci Fair is the town’s most popular event of the year. Thousands hotfoot here every October for exhibitions, cultural events, shows and performances. At 17,000 square metres, it’s the largest fair in Tuscany.

Eating Out in Scandicci

Much like nearby Umbria and Campania, Tuscany is blessed with bountiful fruit and vegetables. Tomatoes are the cornerstone of local cuisine and you’ll find these incorporated into a range of different dishes, such as beef stews, pasta and soup.

The surrounding hills produce excellent wine, olive oil, fruit and vegetables, but the area is best known for its Cinta Senese DOP farms, a delicious cured meat. Oenophiles will have noticed that the town is part of the Chianti Colli Fiorentino production area, so you can expect excellent wine too.

There are dozens of restaurants, bars and cafes lining the piazzas and pretty streets of Scandicci, but for the best bargains, we recommend heading away from the main thoroughfares. Ciccio & Vino is a popular spot with both tourists and locals thanks to their generous platters of antipasti, high-grade bistecca alla fiorentina (T-bone steak) and indulgent desserts. For something cheap and cheerful, try Friggi Friggi, a tiny bar on Piazza Giacomo Matteotti specializing in fried seafood and vegetables. No trip to Tuscany would be complete without a gelato either. Try Gelateria Malotti or Gelatando for authentic techniques and unusual flavours.

Transport

Airport

The nearest airport to Scandicci is Florence Airport (FLR), located five miles from Florence city centre and a twenty-minute drive from Scandicci. If you’re relying on public transport, you can reach the town by bus (take the number 5) or tram (take the T1.3). Florence Airport is the second-largest airport in Tuscany and operates a number of flights to major European cities.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for cheaper flights or more departure options, you could book a direct flight to Pisa Airport. It’s an hour’s drive between the two cities or a bus journey via Florence city centre.

Getting around Scandicci

Scandicci is a relatively compact town and most of the most notable sights are concentrated around the town centre. The town is well served by public transport too, with regular and cheap buses, as well as a tram with direct links to Florence. There is no train station in Scandicci.

However, if you’re hoping to explore some of the region’s rural sights, like the rolling Chianti vineyards or traditional mountain villages, we recommend hiring a car. To reach these sights, you’ll either need to book a transfer or take multiple trams and buses. A car will give you more flexibility and may save you money on transfers and tours in the long run.
