Culture
The town's current name, which is derived from the Arabic "Marsa Allah," or "Port of God," gives us an indication of how strategically vital it once was. Prior to the Arabs, though, there were the Romans and the Carthaginians. After Dionysus I of Siracusa had defeated Motya (or Mozia) in 396 BC, it was these newcomers, under Himilco, who erected Lilibeo's massive harbour and invincible citadel.

Take a day trip to Isola Favignana
Off the coast of Marsala, the Aegadian island of Favignana boasts several caverns and calcarenite rock formations. Taking a boat tour around the island is an excellent way to explore them. Due to the relatively clean seas, this island is also ideal for individuals who prefer scuba diving and snorkelling. You could go to the town of Favignana and spend an afternoon relaxing on the tranquil beach there as well.
Admire the Porta Garibaldi
City walls and a succession of ornate gates were originally part of Marsala's formidable defence system. Few of the complex's defensive fortifications remain, but the Porta Garibaldi is one of the best-preserved. On Via Scipione L'Africano, near the city's major port, you'll find this gatehouse featuring intricate brickwork, massive columns, and Latin inscriptions adorning the walls. The gatehouse also features various decorative sculptures, including a lion and the Marsala heraldry.
Relax at Lido Marakaibbo and Playa Blanca
A succession of lovely golden beaches and coastal resorts may be found farther down the coast from Marsala. In particular, Lido Marakaibbo and Playa Blanca provide a large stretch of sand as well as a variety of fun beach activities.
