Things to do in Agrigento
Discover the incredible Valley of the Temples
When the first European explorers arrived in Sicily at the end of the 18th century, they discovered an unexpected and enormous artistic and archaeological treasure, Akragas. This remarkable collection of Hellenic-style structures includes temples dedicated to gods and goddesses in the necropolis. Added to the UNESCO Heritage List in 1997, it's one of the best specimens of Greek art and architecture in all of Europe, and without a doubt the most significant relic of the island's classical past.
Visit the incredible Santa Maria dei Greci Church
Santa Maria dei Greci Street leads to a church of the same name in the medieval city's oldest area. According to legend, it was built on top of an Athena-related Doric temple from the 5th century B.C. atop the acropolis of Akragas. The Church features a front with a 13th-century Arab-Norman doorway with lovely single lancet windows, which is preceded by a modest and charming courtyard. The interior is divided into three naves by a wooden roof and is decorated with fragments of fourteenth-century murals, a wooden figure of the 500, and a tomb with the ashes of a noble Palermo.
Explore the Abbey of Santo Spirito
The church and accompanying Cistercian monastery were built in 1260. The church's exterior has a stunning Chiaramonte-style doorway topped by a stunning rose window, all in a late Baroque style. It has an 18th-century interior with numerous Serpottian stuccos, a 1758 coffered wooden ceiling with the coat of arms of the Chiaramonte family painted on it, and a holy water stoup from the 1500s. Several frescoes dating from the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries may be seen within the monastic complex.
Eating out in Agrigento

The spaghetti and seafood dishes are both delicious and the prickly pear pie with almond gelato is a must-try.
