Volos - located halfway between Athens and Thessaloniki and combining a magnificent sea with adventurous mountains as a doorway to Mount Pelion (the Centaurs mountain) and as the first step to the Sporades islands - is a place well worth visiting. When it comes to history, Volos has its own Neolithic settlements, Dimini and Sesklo, which were more sophisticated than any other settlement in Greece 6,000 years ago and still standing now.

With ferries sailing from the city to the paradisiacal islands of Skopelos, Skiosos, and Alonissos, Volos is also an industrial port city that might also serve as a starting point for your own journey.

For a stress-free trip, make sure to book your Volos car hire in advance with Enjoy Travel for the best deals! Prices start from just €22 for daily car hire in Volos, for a mini car such as a Citroen C1 or similar. For an economy vehicle like a Toyota Yaris or similar, average daily prices are just €26.

Guide of Volos

Geography

Volos is a seaside port city located in Thessaly, 330 kilometres north of Athens and 220 kilometres south of Thessaloniki. It is the capital of the Magnesia regional unit of the Thessaly Region and Greece's sixth most populated city.

Climate in Volos

With its pleasant Mediterranean climate, Volos is unlike any other town on the plain of Thessaly. Summers may be hot but manageable, and the winters are mild but not freezing. The best seasons to visit the city itself are in the spring and fall; winter is ideal for seeing the Pelion mountain towns, and summer is ideal for taking advantage of the region's many Aegean and Pagasetic Gulf beaches.

Culture

Demetrias, Pagasae, and Iolkos, the three ancient cities of Volos, are all located inside the modern city's boundaries. Sesklo, Greece's earliest acropolis (6000 BC) and the ruins of an ancient palace and houses are located to the west of Volos in the Neolithic communities of Dimini and Sesklo, which are also instances of typical Neolithic civilization.

Things To Do in Volos

Admire the Athanasakeion Archaeological Museum of Volos

The Geometric era, which lasted from 900-700 BC and is connected with such myths as the Trojan War and Jason and the Argonauts, is well-represented at this museum. Finds from the Dimini and Sesklo villages, including terracotta figures, jewellery, and stone implements, may be found here. Whole Mycenaean graves have also been brought to the museum, allowing visitors to see both the skeleton and the items that were placed around it. Steles from Dimitriada surrounding the Pagasetic Gulf, as well as reliefs from the early Christian and Byzantine eras, still exhibit brilliant traces of paint.

Explore the Dimini Archaeological Site

The remnants of a Neolithic settlement, which was initially inhabited approximately 4800-4500 BC, are located west of Volos. Dimini, built around a central square according to a social hierarchy, displays a degree of urban design expertise not found in other communities from this time period. Residents of Dimini also enjoyed an unusually high level of privacy in their dwellings, where cooking was done inside rather than outdoors, as had previously been the custom. There are also walls separating each of the homes, which is unusual for a Middle Neolithic town. A tholos tomb (beehive tomb) from a later Mycenaean village may be found close by.

Hike up to Mount Pelion

A total of 24 settlements can be found atop this mountain, each with its own distinct style of "Pelian" dwellings fashioned from green or blue slate with painted wooden window frames and doors. A drive through gorges, waterfalls, and orchards full of plum and firiki, a kind of apple native to Egypt, will have you yearning for more. As the birthplace of Chiron the Centaur and the site of Thetis and Peleus' marriage, Mount Pelion has a prominent position in Greek mythology, setting the stage for the Trojan War. And if you're ready to put in the kilometres, the Aegean beneath Pelion's eastern slopes has some of the nicest beaches in mainland Greece.

Getting Around Volos

Trains connect Volos to other cities in Greece via Larissa. However, as a general rule, using KTEL buses (intercity coaches) is the most convenient method to get around Greece. This is especially true if you're coming from Athens to Volos by rail, which takes five hours rather than the coach's three. There is a daily bus service from Athens Liossion Station to Volos, and a daily bus service from Thessaloniki's bus terminal to Volos. Daily direct bus from Larissa to Patras, Ioannina, Volos, Trikala, Karditsa, and a slew of other Greek cities link Volos to the rest of the country. Many visitors also opt to explore Volos at their own convenience by hiring a car. Many car hire agencies may be found in the city centre. Taxis and rideshares are also widely used.
