Geography

The city of Veria, the capital of the Imathia region of Central Macedonia, is located in northern Greece. It lies 511 kilometres north-northwest of the capital Athens and 73 kilometres west-southwest of Thessaloniki. It is nestled at the foothills of the Vermio Mountains.

Culture

The first known human habitation in Veria dates back to the early Iron Age, about 1000 BC, according to archaeological data. Before the entrance of Greek settlers, the region was occupied by Thracian tribes, who ultimately established the kingdom of Macedonia.

Admire the Old Cathedral of Veria

Across the city of Veria, there are more than 40 churches from the late Byzantine era that are still standing. The Bishop of Veria erected the Old Cathedral of Veria between 1070 and 1080 AD, and it is one of the most exquisite mediaeval Byzantine temples still standing. Three aisled basilicas are a hallmark of the structure, which resembles the early Christian temple of St. Dimitrios in Thessaloniki, which inspired its design. There is a wonderful collection of artefacts from the 12th, 13th, and 14th centuries in the Old Cathedral's architecture and art. During the German occupation of Greece in World War II, it was also used as a stable.

Cobblestone lanes and majestic houses line the streets of the Jewish Quarter, which was established in 1850 and is situated near the Tripotamos River. One of the oldest synagogues in Europe, Barbuta, the stone edifice of the Synagogue, with beautiful interior decorating, can be found in the centre of the Jewish area, right in the middle of everything. Today, it is shuttered and only open when Jewish people are travelling or coming to worship there. Explore the Neolithic Settlement of Nikomedia

Among the earliest neolithic villages in Europe, it is thought to date back to about 6250 and 6050 BC. There are square wood-built homes of 12 metres, featuring an impressive array of bone tools, decorative seals, flint knives, clay figures, and pendants, as well as clay sculptures of slender ladies with phallic heads and folded arms. According to the archaeologists, either a flood, a fire, or an invasion by outsiders drove the settlement's residents to relocate. This archaeological site is currently under renovation and will soon open its doors to the public to enjoy its unique, historical treasures.

They serve delicious pork and beef dishes and are conveniently located near the major tourist sites.
