Veria is the perfect destination for anyone seeking a picturesque village steeped in Greek history, culture, and heritage. The Tripotamo River divides this enigmatic metropolis, which is perched at the base of the Vermio Mountains. Immediately behind Constantinople and Thessaloniki, it was the third most significant city in the Byzantine Empire from the 11th to the 14th centuries. Veria was also the second most important town in ancient Macedonia, after Aigai. The city has earned the moniker "Little Jerusalem" due to its amazing collection of Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches. In spite of its past importance, Veria today is a modest, tidy provincial town nestled in the hills of central Macedonia with a stunning view of the vast plain below.

For a fun trip, make sure to book your Veria car hire in advance with Enjoy Travel for the best deals! Prices for daily car hire in Veria start from just €24 for a mini car like a Toyota Aygo or similar. An economy car such as a Toyota Yaris costs an average of €32 per day.

    Guide of Veria

    Geography

The city of Veria, the capital of the Imathia region of Central Macedonia, is located in northern Greece. It lies 511 kilometres north-northwest of the capital Athens and 73 kilometres west-southwest of Thessaloniki. It is nestled at the foothills of the Vermio Mountains.

    Climate in Veria

Veria has a pleasant climate that is typically warm and temperate. The months of May and October are the most likely to have nice weather, with average temperatures ranging between 20-25°C.

    Culture

The first known human habitation in Veria dates back to the early Iron Age, about 1000 BC, according to archaeological data. Before the entrance of Greek settlers, the region was occupied by Thracian tribes, who ultimately established the kingdom of Macedonia.

    Things To Do in Veria

Admire the Old Cathedral of Veria

Across the city of Veria, there are more than 40 churches from the late Byzantine era that are still standing. The Bishop of Veria erected the Old Cathedral of Veria between 1070 and 1080 AD, and it is one of the most exquisite mediaeval Byzantine temples still standing. Three aisled basilicas are a hallmark of the structure, which resembles the early Christian temple of St. Dimitrios in Thessaloniki, which inspired its design. There is a wonderful collection of artefacts from the 12th, 13th, and 14th centuries in the Old Cathedral's architecture and art. During the German occupation of Greece in World War II, it was also used as a stable.

    Stroll through the Jewish Quarter

Cobblestone lanes and majestic houses line the streets of the Jewish Quarter, which was established in 1850 and is situated near the Tripotamos River. One of the oldest synagogues in Europe, Barbuta, the stone edifice of the Synagogue, with beautiful interior decorating, can be found in the centre of the Jewish area, right in the middle of everything. Today, it is shuttered and only open when Jewish people are travelling or coming to worship there. While visiting the city between 51 and 57 AD, the Apostle Paul is believed to have delivered sermons here.

Explore the Neolithic Settlement of Nikomedia

Among the earliest neolithic villages in Europe, it is thought to date back to about 6250 and 6050 BC. There are square wood-built homes of 12 metres, featuring an impressive array of bone tools, decorative seals, flint knives, clay figures, and pendants, as well as clay sculptures of slender ladies with phallic heads and folded arms. According to the archaeologists, either a flood, a fire, or an invasion by outsiders drove the settlement's residents to relocate. This archaeological site is currently under renovation and will soon open its doors to the public to enjoy its unique, historical treasures.

    Eating Out in Veria

Olive is a friendly and welcoming restaurant that promises a taste explosion on your plate. The service is really kind and helpful, and the excellent spaghetti and pizzas are a must-try. Bergiṓtiko boasts a wonderful ambience with a romantic mood with soft live music in the evenings. The beef souvlaki will most likely be the greatest cut of steak you've ever had. The house red wine, orange cake dessert, and meat wrapped in vine leaves are all excellent choices as well. Despite the fact that the staff do not speak much English, it is still an excellent choice for travellers seeking authentic Greek cuisine. Ovelos Psitopoleio is another restaurant to bookmark. They serve delicious pork and beef dishes and are conveniently located near the major tourist sites.

    Getting Around Veria

Veria has a train station and serves as a hub for local and inter-city bus services. Regular trains run between Thessaloniki and Edessa, stopping at Veria. Every day, many direct buses travel between Thessaloniki and Veria.

Many visitors travelling through Greece choose to hire a vehicle since it provides more comfort, flexibility, and convenience than using public transportation. Greece not only offers a fantastic network of well-maintained highways, but the scenery along the way is also exceptionally attractive, with many of the routes offering breathtaking ocean vistas. If you're going with a big party, renting a minivan may be a good option. You may also book a one-way rental, which allows you to pick up your car in one city – say, Athens – and drop it off in another – say, Veria – before flying out of the country. This would save you the time and inconvenience of having to drive it back to your location.
