Tyrnavos (also spelled Tirnavos) is a tranquil town in central Greece. It is two hours from Thessaloniki and three hours from Athens. It is famous for its wine and brandy production as well as its tsipouro tavernas, of which there are over 600. These traditional taverns are much like pubs and are meeting hubs for locals and tourists alike.

Tyrnavos is also famous for its annual Easter Carnaval, which has its roots in antiquity. During Holy Week, the town plays hosts to thousands of visitors who come to enjoy the fun festivities and the chariot parade.

Geography

Tyrnavos is a municipality of Larissa in the Thessaly region of Greece. For reference, it is located south-southwest of Thessaloniki and Katerini, northwest of the town of Larissa, east-northeast of Trikala and south-southeast of Elassona and Kozani. It is the second largest town in the region of Larissa.

The region comprises mountains, grasslands, and farmlands and is part of the Thessalian Plain and the Titarisos valley.

In Tyrnavos, the climate is warm and temperate. The rain in Tyrnavos falls mostly in the winter, with relatively little rain in the summer. Culture

Tyrnavos takes its name from the Slavic name Trnovo meaning “place of thorns”. The Slavs built this pastoral settlement in the 7th to 8th century AD. The settlement was then conquered in 1423 by the Turkish General Turban Bey. At one time there were 16 churches and 6 mosques in the town, however, nowadays, the only Ottoman building to have been preserved is the Turkish Bath. In 2021, an earthquake struck the region damaging many churches and homes.

Tyrnavos has a long, traditional food and drink culture and the local un-aged brandy, tsipouro carries PGI designation meaning that it is a protected product. The town is also a major wine producing centre.

The town is also famous the carnival of Tirnavos and the custom of Shrove Monday. Thousands of people from all over Greece come to witness and partake in this colourful, vibrant cultural festival which culminates on the last Sunday with a huge parade of chariots through the town.

Things To Do in Tyrnavos

The fountain of Tirnavos is an artificial lake and recreation ground where you can chill out with the locals and do a bit of birdwatching as the surrounding areas are an important biotope of migratory birds.

Climb the hill to view Saint Ann’s chapel and a war monument that pays tribute to the memory of the soldiers that were killed in the battle of Meluna and Deleria that took place on April 11, 1897.

For a very enjoyable walk, head up the piney hill of Prophet Elijah where long ago once stood Zeus’ temple. At the same site, you can see the ruined border stations that existed until the liberation in the war of 1912 and 1913.

To beat the heat, find a bench under the shade of the trees in the Park Touba. This peaceful green space is the perfect place to relax, enjoy a picnic or just while away the hours watching the world go by. It’s also a great place to visit with children as there is a nice playground.

Eating Out in Tyrnavos

When visiting Tyrnavos, you will pass by many tsipouro tavernas aka, tsipourádika. It would be remiss not to enjoy a meal in these traditional gastronomic houses and favourite meeting places. These small restaurants serve simple meals at reasonable prices and are accompanied by pure tsipouro (local un-aged brandy). Much like pubs, these places are relaxed and casual with an unbeatable atmosphere. Tsipouradika are open from early in the morning until late at night and we highly recommend trying a meze, which range from fresh fish to shellfish, to all manner of other seafood. Don’t pass up the chance to try fried local shrimp in a tomato sauce, tangy feta Greek cheese and fresh salads.
