Geography

The Greek island of Thasos, also known as Thassos, is located in the North Aegean Sea, not far from the Thracian coast. It is officially part of Macedonia's Kavala regional unit. It is Greece's northernmost main island and the 12th-largest in terms of surface area. Also known as Limenas Thasou, the ‘Port of Thasos' is the biggest town on the island's northern shore.

The island of Thassos has a transitional Mediterranean climate, with chilly, wet winters and bright, sunny summers. There may be some chilly nights in June and early July, so it's a good idea to carry a sweatshirt or sweater, even in the middle of the summer. Thassos Transport

Airport

The closest airport is Kavala International Airport "Alexander the Great" (KVA), which offers the most direct access to Thassos Island. It’s a 15-minute drive from the airport to the ferry port at Keramoti, from where you can hop on a ferry (with your car, if you like!) to Thassos.

Getting around Thassos

KTEL buses can get you to any destination you choose. Alternatively, taxis may be found at the main square or on the major routes of the bigger towns. Taxi Boats are also a great way to go around some of the more remote beaches. Both Limenas Port and Limenaria have them.

Driving is also a good option as there are around 100 kilometres of roads across the island. While driving across Thassos, you may make stops at some of the island's beaches or traditional towns. There are a number of beaches where you may just park your car and dive right in! As a result, many visitors opt to hire a car while in Thassos for enhanced freedom and flexibility.
