Visit the Roupel Bunker

Anyone interested in wartime history should pay a visit to the Roupel fortress, also known as the Metaxas Line, which will give insight into the amazing military resistance of the Greek army against invaders throughout both World Wars. To access the fortifications, travel around 30 minutes from Serres towards the Bulgarian border. The Roupel Bunker is just approximately 100 meters underground, yet it is a humbling experience to see the valour of the Greek troops that led to the successful defence against the Nazis during 1941. Today, it is a military-supervised location, and army recruits fluent in English attempt to re-enact the wars that took place there. If you come on a nice day, the view from atop the bunker of the Strymonas river flowing through its valleys is spectacular. At the location, a modest museum showcases actual objects and images left by the Nazis after invading the bunker.

Tour the Kerkini Lake National Park

Lake Kerkini, an artificial reservoir built in 1932 to aid irrigation near the Strymon River, is one of the most beautiful Greek wetlands that has garnered worldwide renown.
