Things To Do in Samothrace

Visit the Sanctuary of The Great Gods

The archaeological site of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods is probably one of the most intriguing historical places to see in Samothrace. The sanctuary, located near to the ancient city of Paleopoli in the green valley of Saos Mountain, used to house secret rites such as initiation ceremonies. Here, you can also find the ruins of a Byzantine citadel. The majority of the ruins, however, can be dated back to the pre- Hellenic and Roman times. To have a better understanding of the remains' history, go to the neighbouring Archaeological Museum at the site entrance. Among the significant museum exhibits is a plaster cast for the famed Winged Victory of Samothrace, which is currently housed in the Louvre in Paris.

Make a trip to the Panagia Krimniotissa

The city of Samothrace, according to historical records, is home to about 999 churches and chapels. Located on a steep and barren hill overlooking Pachia Ammos Beach on the island's southernmost tip, the Panagia Krimniotissa is one of the island's most beautiful churches. Even though it is tough to get up the muddy mountain road that leads to this little white chapel, the effort is well worth it in the end. It is possible to get excellent panoramic views of the whole island, as well as vistas of islands that were originally part of Greece but are now part of Turkey, by climbing up the chapel.

Discover the pretty Gria Vathra

The vathres, or natural ponds or lagoons, created by Samothrace's many waterfalls are referred to as such in the local language. Gria Vathra is one of the most prominent natural attractions in the area, and it is just 2 kilometres away from the hamlet of Therma. It consists of a series of at least 10 waterfalls and lagoons that are rather easy to reach. Swimming in the chilly waters of the lagoons is a refreshing experience, given that you are surrounded by gorgeous lush green woods.

Eating Out in Samothrace

Samothrace boasts a number of excellent restaurants and tavernas providing delectable Greek food. Here are some of our favourite supper options. I Synantisi is a well-known bar in Kamariotissa. You'll find excellent fish and gavros here, as well as meat delicacies like roasted goat and rice pilaf. You'll appreciate the warm, comfortable atmosphere while eating chaslamas, a Turkish dessert. Fournello is a Kamariotissa Italian pizza where you can relax and eat by the sea. If you want to try something new, you should try the pizza and pasta. O Lefkos Pyrgos in Hora is a fantastic sweet store with some really creative dessert ideas. Lemonade with honey and cinnamon, Greek yoghurt with bitter almond, and unusual teas, coffees, and drinks are some treats on the menu that may appeal to you.

Transport

Airport

Samothrace does not have an airport. You can fly into Alexandroupoli Airport (AXD) and take a ferry from the Port of Alexandroupoli to the Port of Kamariotissa in Samothrace. The boat ride takes around 2 hours and is available year-round, though it is offered twice daily in the peak summer months of July and August. Alternatively, you can also fly into Kavala Airport (KVA) or Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) and drive down to Samothrace in a hired car, which you can bring on the ferry with you.

Getting Around Samothrace

There is no better way to see the island than by car. Cars that are small enough to fit through the tiny hamlet streets may be useful.
