The most ideal time to visit Samos is between June and September, when the weather is hot and sunny. With an average high temperature of 33°C and a minimum temperature of 24°C, July is the warmest month of the year.

Things to do in Samos

Visit the Heraion of Samos

Samos is said to be the location of Zeus' honeymoon with his wife and sister Hera. From the 8th century BC onwards, a series of temples devoted to Hera were built here, and the remains of these, known as the Heraion, may still be seen today. The site of the temple, with its lone standing column known as the Kolona, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, about 7 kilometres southwest of Pythogorion in the low marshy valley of the Imbrasos River. The site is highly popular with visitors and is the most renowned in Greece for Hera devotion, as shown by the votive offerings to the goddess.

Marvel at the Tunnel of Eupalinos

Another popular tourist attraction is the Tunnel of Eupalinos, which is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the ancient world. It is really a water tunnel that used to be the middle portion of a massive aqueduct that was built over a ten-year period in the 6th century BC by the great architect Eupalinus. Work was done at both ends at the same time, and the tunnel is approximately 1.8 meters high and wide, with a length of around 1350 meters. You'll be awed by the inventiveness, architectural talents, and mathematical calculations that went into creating this tunnel to convey water down Mount Kastro to the ancient Pythagorion at a time when technology was still in its infancy.

Tour the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani

The Monastery of Panagia Spiliani is located on Mount Kastro, just north of Pythagorion, at a height of 125 meters above sea level. Locals think that this 100-metre-long cave chapel, which houses a marble figure of the Virgin Mary, was a place of devotion long before Christianity arrived in the area. It is also supposed that Pythagoras, the great mathematician, hid and taught here. From here, you may enjoy breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea.

Eating out in Samos

Samos has beautiful restaurants all across the island that provide great fish and Mediterranean delicacies. Here are some of our favourites for a fantastic gastronomic experience. Visit Nick the Greek, which is recognized for its friendly service and the tastiest seafood. Every Saturday, there is live music as an extra bonus. The prices at Lakis Restaurant are really inexpensive, and you should not miss out on their complimentary sweets and ouzo. The chicken souvlaki served here is very delicious. Casa di Roma is a renowned Italian restaurant in the picturesque Pythagorion harbour, serving delicious tiramisu and apple pie with ice cream in addition to traditional spaghetti and pizza.

Samos Transport

Airport

Samos is served by Samos International Airport (SMI) which is located 5 kilometres from the town of Pythagorio.

Getting around Samos

Taking the bus is the most cost-effective method to move about Samos. It has a fleet of more than 20 buses and vast routes that serve practically all of the island's settlements. Chora is the location of the principal bus stop. To go to locations not accessible by bus, you may either hire a car or use metered taxis. Hiring a car certainly works out more cost-effective if you're planning to stay a while, are travelling in a large group, or plan to make many stops on your itinerary.
