Visualise the Greek God Zeus throwing a massive rock in a fit of rage into the sea. This rock could be the now deserted and mysterious island of Psara! This tiny Greek island lies in the Aegean Sea in the middle of nowhere! It holds a heroic and cruel history, and together with uninhabited Antipsara, it forms the municipality of Psara. Now you may think that this island due its isolated location would have nothing to offer, however don't be too quick to write it off! Psara and Antipsara boast pristine shores, hospitable and friendly people, and an incredibly aesthetically pleasing and cosy village, ready for you to explore. The smiles of the locals have been said to be so bright and powerful, that one look and all your deepest worries will completely vanish! This island is the perfect place if you're looking to escape the busy life and get lost in the peace and serenity of a world that seems as though you have completely left planet Earth! Psara may lie in the middle of nowhere, but it has a very interesting way of still being able to give you everything that you need.

It was once beautifully said by the Greek poet Dionysios Solomos - "...On the full back ridge of Psara, glory stands by herself, considering the brilliant lads, and wearing a crown wreath, product of a few herbs that had stayed in the deserted island".

Things to do in Psara and Antipsara

As you would have already guessed, the population of Psara is very small - 450 inhabitants to be precise. But don't let this dampen your hopes regarding activities on the island. It may be small, but you will leave feeling fulfilled and overjoyed with your stay. The only village on the island, (which has the same name as the very island itself) will have you in awe and snapping photos of every corner! You can wander down the narrow streets, that are lined with stone houses tiled with red roofs, all built around the harbour. Sights worth visiting are the Church of Agios Nikolaos and the House of Konstantinos Kanaris.

The main source of livelihood for the locals has always been fishing for the locally abundant slipper lobsters, and shipping, with some tourist development in recent years. If you get friendly with the locals, they may take you with them on a day of spearfishing and show you their way of life! You'll be so very impressed at the way the fishermen dive into the crystal-clear waters, thrusting their sharp spears into lobsters with great precision and timing. Now that would be an experience to remember!

Psara and Antipsara also has some of the most amazing beaches. You have approximately 40 beaches to choose from, so there is something for everyone's taste. This means that even during the high season you will have the chance to have an entire beach all to yourself.

Lakka beach is a popular, long, sandy beach on the west side of the island, easily accessible from Psara village. On the southwest side you'll find the secluded Spitalia beach. If you're looking for privacy the some more secluded beaches are: Ftelio beach, Lazaretta beach, Kato Gialos, Agia Kyriaki, Arhondiki beach, Fanari beach, and Ftelio beach.

Here are some activities that are worth doing during your stay:

  • 1. Boat trip to the beaches of Psara. Excursion boats operate from Psara harbour.
  • 2. Day trip to the Isle of Antipsara. If you thought Psara has beautiful beaches, then wait till you arrive at this rocky island. It's located only 3km from Psara, and is home to one of the most astonishing beaches in the entire Aegean Sea.
  • 3. Rent a kayak from the harbour, and take yourself on a trip around Psara visiting some of the nearby islets. If you're feeling extra daring, then spend a night in a deserted beach. This will be an experience you'll never forget, lying on a sandy beach, staring up at the starry night sky as you drift off.
  • 4. Hike the inland of Psara.
  • 5. Enjoy the sunset from Mavri Rahi on the southern side of Psara Island.
  • 6. Hike your way to the Monastery of the Dormition of Virgin Mary. Admire the views towards other islands in the Aegean Sea, like Skyros and Lesvos.
