There's no denying that Poros is stunning and a must-see if you're island hopping in Greece. A lovely coastal town with a slew of waterfront dining options, it is a lovely honeymoon destination. But apart from enticing couples for a romantic retreat, Poros boasts a rich naval history as well. While the Greek War of Independence was taking place, the first naval station in contemporary Greece was built in Poros in 1827. When Salamis Naval Base was established in 1881, most of Poros Naval Base's functions were transferred to Salamis. The Hellenic Navy still uses the land as a training facility for naval troops today. Therefore, Poros is also highly recommended for history buffs.

Geography

In the southern portion of the Saronic Gulf, Poros is a tiny Greek island-pair that is 31 nautical miles south of Athens' port of Piraeus and separated from the Peloponnese by a 200-meter-wide sea channel. Two islands comprise Poros: the volcanically formed southerly portion of Sphaeria, where the city of Poros is now situated, and the northern and biggest portion of the island, Kalaureia, also spelled Kalvria or Calauria. A bridge spans a short strait that joins the two islands.

Climate in Poros

In Poros, Greece, the ideal months to go swimming are July and August, when the water temperature ranges from 25°C to 29°C and there is little chance of rain. Summer is the best time to visit because you can take full advantage of the beaches!

Culture

Pogon was the ancient name of Poros. It is a favorite weekend destination for Athenian tourists, like other Saronic ports.

Things To Do

Sunbathe on the Askeli Beach

Askeli Beach, covered by enormous eucalyptus trees on a coastal road east of Poros town, is one of the island's most popular tourist attractions. Sun loungers, cafés, and bars abound here, and the place is extremely popular during the tourist season. You must arrive early to get a position on the beach, since they sell out quickly. Private deck chairs are often related to the hotels, as are several more linked to the restaurants and pubs. Prices are included in the purchase of your beverages or food. The beach's location is quite handy, and it is ideal for a weekend getaway.

Discover the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi

The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi is located 4 kilometers east of the main city on the slopes of a vast pine forest. The monastery was built on this spot by the Archbishop of Athens, Lakavos II, after he was healed of a grievous disease by drinking Holy Water from a nearby spring. Within its grounds, the first orphanage and the first Ecclesiastical School were erected. The main church, or katholikon, is beautifully adorned with paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Rare artifacts such as the Holy Relic of St. John the Baptist and a stunning iconostasis erected in Central Anatolia may also be found here. Right adjacent to it is the Panagia of the Zoodochos Pigi, a Madonna symbol. The western wall of the church is adorned with a magnificent Christ Pantocrator.

Climb the Clock Tower

The Poros Clock Tower, one of the island's most recognizable monuments, was built in 1927. It has the highest elevation on the island. The stunning views from the top will undoubtedly wow you as you climb the tower by a ladder from the shoreline. It draws a lot of people all year round as it makes for a great background for Instagram photos. From here, you can view the whole strait as well as the Aderes ridge.

Eating Out

Poros restaurants are largely family-run pubs in Poros town or popular beaches like Askeli. Here are some of our top recommendations. Karavolos is well-liked by locals and tourists alike, and it provides outstanding Greek cuisine as well as a wonderful range of wines. Oasis is a relatively older restaurant in town that uses only the freshest products. You'll like their extensive menu of appetizers, stews, roasts, and grilled meats. The exquisite Askeli restaurant serves sophisticated Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. Here, carefully crafted dishes will surely please your palate.

Transport

Airport

Poros does not have its own airport. However, the International Airport of Athens (ATH) is the nearest to Poros Island and receives flights from all Greek islands as well as the rest of the globe.

Getting Around Poros

Every day, boats to Poros leave from the port of Piraeus in Athens. The ferry (hydrofoil) ride from Piraeus to Poros takes one hour. The bus service on the island will take you to the beaches or the aforementioned monastery. Taxis are also available near the ferry port. Bicycles and mopeds may also be rented. Many visitors also opt to hire a car from local suppliers to get around Poros as it offers increased freedom and flexibility to explore the top attractions on the island at one’s own pace. They also work out to be more cost effective than taking multiple taxis or even public transportation if you are travelling in a large group.
