The Peloponnese peninsula, which is connected to the mainland by the Isthmus of Corinth, is one of Greece's less-explored places. Home of the Kalamata olive, vast untouched beaches, pristine waterfalls, world-class cuisine, and friendly locals, Peloponnese is a perfect destination for a vacation. It has a remarkable history, with Venetian fortifications, Mycenaean palaces, and Byzantine towns all strewn around the region, all bearing witness to the passage of time.

There are also some of Greece's most prominent ancient sites, like Olympia and Epidaurus and Mycenae in the region. It is also steeped in mythology, adding to its intrigue. Legend has it that the Argonauts sailed here in quest of the Golden Fleece, and that Paris of Troy and Helen of Troy eloped from the lovely island of Kranai, located off the coast of the Peloponnese region.

Geography

Peloponnese is a huge, mountainous body of land protruding southward into the Mediterranean. For millennia, it has been a key part of Greece and connected to the rest of the mainland by the Isthmus of Corinth. The Ionian Sea is to the west of the Peloponnese, while the Aegean Sea lies to the east of the region. Mountains of limestone rise above the landscape, which is punctuated by small coastal plains and natural rocky harbours. Nafplio is the most populous city in this region.

Climate in Peloponnese

The months of April, May, October, and November are the most likely to have beautiful days with average temperatures ranging between 20 and 25°C. The summer months of June, July, August, and September are the warmest in the year. February is the coldest month of the year, with an average high of 15°C.

Things To Do in Peloponnese

Visit the Great Theatre of Epidaurus

Visiting the theatre in the ancient city of Epidaurus is one of the most intriguing things to do in Peloponnese. It is the greatest antique theatre in Greece, built in the 4th century BC and recognised for its architecture, aesthetics, and acoustics. The seats have been renovated throughout the ages, but the stage has mostly remained intact. Indeed, its incredible acoustics allow all 14,000 spectators to hear every note and every word said, even from the top seats on the 54th deck. Every year in June and July, the Epidaurus Festival is held here, providing visitors with a memorable experience.

Explore the ruins of Mystras

Mystras is a fortified town atop Mount Taygetos that dates from the 13th century. In 1989, the UNESCO World Heritage List included the remnants of this historic town, which comprises the castle, palace, churches, and monasteries. Mystras is Greece's most complete example of a mediaeval walled towb. Some of the attractions here will astound you, such as the Cathedral of St. Demetrius, the Pandanassa Convent, the Perivleptos Monastery, and the Palace of Despots at the summit of the ruins, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys.

Discover the archaeological site of Mycenae

Mycenae is an ancient site at Mykines in Argolis in northeastern Peloponnese. It was one of the principal centres of Greek civilisation in the second century BC, controlling southern Greece and portions of Anatolia. It was discovered at the beginning of the 18th century according to Pausanius' account of the Lion Gate in the 2nd century AD. The highlights here include the Treasury of Atreus, also known as the Tomb of Agamemnon, and the tomb circles of Mycenean aristocracy ornamented with rich artefacts.
