Geography

Nea Ionia is a northern suburb of Athens in Greece. It lies some 7km northeast of Athens city centre and is part of the Attica region. Its previous name was Podarades, named after Ziliftar Poda, a Greek Revolution Hero who, along with his followers, settled in the area. When the first refugees arrived, they were mainly from Pisidia of Asia Minor, so the area was renamed Nea Pisidia. However, later many more refugees arrived from other places in Ionia, so the neighbourhood was renamed Nea Ionia.

Culture

Nea Ionia takes its name from Ionia, the region in Anatolia from which many Greeks migrated in the 1920s as a part of the Population Exchange between Greece and Turkey. Nea means new and it was used to denote the new neighbourhoods where the displaced Greeks settled. The names of the streets in Nea Ionia tell the story of where these refugees were born. Streets include Ellispontou, Inepoleos, Moschonision, Psaron, and Trabzon - all places along the Black Sea coast of Smyrna (Izmir) and Ikonion.
