Guide to Naxos

Geography

Naxos, located 103 nautical miles southeast of Athens, is the largest Cycladic island, with a total surface area of 429 square kilometres. The beaches might be sandy or rocky, and the coastline stretches about 150 kilometres. Naxos has a population of 20.000 people. The majority of them live in Chora, the main town of Naxos.

In terms of topography, Naxos is well-known for its sandy beaches along its western shore. The western shore is less accessible and has a more rugged coastline. Halki, Tripodes, Melanes, Sangri, and Egares are the settlements situated in the lush valleys. The highest point of Mount Zas rises to a height of 1004 meters above sea level.

Climate in Naxos

Temperatures on the island are typically moderate, however the island's proximity to the water results in humid weather. Summers and winters in Naxos are expected to be mild. From the middle of July until the middle of August, the popular northerly wind Meltemi blows across the island, rising in strength. The months of April through October are great for visiting Naxos in the spring or autumn. Hiking, walking, and taking in the scenery of the island are best done in the spring and fall. Although the weather is pleasant enough for sunbathing and resting on the beach, the water remains too chilly for swimming.

Culture

Naxos has a rich history that is represented in a variety of tourist attractions, in addition to the numerous ancient temples, Venetian fortifications established by the Byzantines, and various museums. The Portara Gate, the ruins of an ancient Apollo's Temple that was never completed, is one of the island's most prominent landmarks. The Gate is often the first stop on a visitor's sightseeing tour of Chora.

Things to do in Naxos

Visit the Portara

Portara will catch your eye practically as soon as your boat arrives in Naxos. This towering marble structure, also known as the Temple of Apollo, was erected around 530 BC and is one of its most captivating features. Essentially a massive entryway to an incomplete temple, you may be curious to discover more about Portara's past, since locals have conflicting perspectives. Some say it was created to honour Apollo, while others claim it was built to honour Dionysus, the Greek God of wine. You will be captivated as Portara provides the ideal setting for breathtaking sunset photography.

Make a trip to a Blue Flag Beach

Agios Prokopios, located south of the capital Chora, is a magnificent beach that you will absolutely enjoy. It is one of the most popular beaches on Naxos, with an expansive turquoise blue sea and a 1.5-kilometre-long beachfront that is partly deep and partially protected by strong winds and currents. As you walk south, you will see seaside eateries, sunloungers, and sunshades. The ruins of a salt pan can be seen at the northern end.

Go for a hike on Mount Zas

Hiking enthusiasts will particularly like Naxos, which is mountainous and offers several excellent hiking and walking paths. The peak of Mount Zas, also known as Zeus, draws a large number of visitors since Greek mythology states that Zeus was reared in a cave on this mountain. You may trek to the peak for a panoramic view of the island, but keep in mind that it is the highest point in the Cyclades. As you make your way to the top, explore this cave. The most direct route departs at Aghia Marina and covers around 7 kilometres with a 300-metre elevation rise.

Eating out in Naxos

Among the Greek islands, Naxos is well regarded as a gastronomical treasure with a delectable culinary scene. Axiotissa Restaurant is one of the greatest spots in Naxos for a fantastic supper. You'll be pleased to discover a wide selection of contemporary Greek food as well as foreign wines. Remember to reserve your seats ahead of time. Kalliopi is a family-run bar where everything is made in-house since it has its own farm. The outstanding quality of the cuisine here needs to be sampled, even though the journey to get here is rather difficult.

Barozzi restaurant and cocktail bar is a newly opened gourmet dining establishment in Naxos that will undoubtedly wow you. The magnificent atmosphere and superb service are worth every dime you spend here, which is housed in a 1930s structure.

Naxos Transport

Airport

Naxos Island National Airport (JNX) is the closest major airport. Naxos is only 3 kilometres away from the airport. At 45 kilometres from Naxos, Greece, Paros Airport (PAS) is another prominent airport with domestic flights.

Getting around Naxos

Naxos is reasonably easy to get around, with regular public bus services connecting Chora to the main cities and villages around. It is also the least expensive means of transportation for visiting tourist attractions, however, they aren’t always timely. If you want to explore the island's less-populated east shore, you should hire a motorcycle or a vehicle. Water taxis and private boat transports are also available but must be booked ahead of time. Many visitors also opt to hire a car to give them flexibility and freedom from the unreliable schedule of the public buses.
