Guide of Messolonghi

Geography

Messolonghi is a charming town and municipality in western Greece. It is the capital of Etoloakarnania, the largest region in the country. Squeezed between the Achelous and Evinos rivers, it is flanked by the Arakynthos mountains in the northeast and the Gulf of Patras in the south.

The town was built around the sprawling, shallow Missolonghi Lagoon, the largest in Greece and one of the largest in the Mediterranean. The park is renowned for its biological, ecological and geological value, encompassing an extensive complex of riverside areas, lagoons, swamps, mud flats and forest.

Climate in Messolonghi

Messolonghi enjoys a warm and temperate climate. Summers here begin at the end of June and end in September, when temperatures can soar to 35°C. Rainfall is mostly concentrated around the lagoons, with an average of 106 rainy days per year. January is the coldest month in Messolonghi, with average temperatures of 7°C.

If you’re planning on hitting the sights and exploring the lagoon, late spring and early autumn are the best time to travel to the town when the temperatures are a little cooler.

Culture

Messolonghi supposedly takes its name from the Italian words ‘mezzo’ and ‘langhi’, which means ‘town between two lakes’. Little is known about the area in ancient times and the first written reference to the town as a small fishing settlement dates back to the 16th century. By the 18th century, it had become an important naval power and the town played a significant role in the Greek Revolution. In fact, it was the first place in the country to join the uprising.

Prominent authors Kostis Palamas, Miltiadis Malakasis and Antonis Travlantonis, as well as Prime Ministers Charilaos Trikoupis, Dimitrios and Zepameinondas Deligiorgis were all born here and Lord Byron died here. Today, the town is a major fishing hub.
