Leros is a laid back Greek island, located between Patmos and Kalymnos, and belongs to the Dodecanese island group in the southern Aegean Sea. Things to do in Leros

Over the last few years, Leros has been developing into a scuba diving destination, with its sea bed filled with old ancient wrecks, colourful fish and fascinating coral. The island is small and jam packed with visually exciting things and stunning landscapes, so it's best to put on comfortable footwear, and spend your days exploring and simply getting lost! Hiking is very popular, especially in spring and autumn, when the weather is not hot. Old footpaths cross the island and lead to secluded beaches, small chapels, Medieval castles, and seaside villages. Here are a few things that you should definitely check out during your stay in Leros:

Traditional Windmills

The Windmills of Leros Dodecanese are no longer in use, however due to its stunning and cute design, they are a huge attraction for visitors. These windmills will have you snapping photos for absolutely hours. The most picturesque site of old windmills are the ones in Pandeli, on the way to the castle.

Leros Medieval Castle

The Castle of Pandeli is a strong Medieval fortress overlooking the capital of Leros. It is also known as the 'Castle of our Lady', which means the Castle of the Virgin Mary. It's an exciting journey getting to this 10th century Castle, as you have to climb up a rough road or 400 steps from Pandeli.

Leros War Museum Tunnel

This museum is situated in Lakki, and constitutes a testament to the weapons of mass destruction and loss of human life in the Second World War. It's a very educational and impressive museum - definitely worth a visit.

Eating Out in Leros

Although this is an island with a low profile in tourism, there are many nice places to eat and drink in Leros. Head over to the popular places such as Agia Marina, Alinda, and Lakki. Make sure to check out the restaurants and taverns at the beach shore - these offer a nice view of the Aegean Sea. This is also the place where some lovely cafes are found, while most bars are found in Alinda and Agia Marina.

'Skipper's' is a great option if you're looking for seafood, Greek and Mediterranean cuisines during the day, with a beautiful view of the Lakki harbour. In the evenings, Skipper's transitions into a cocktail bar, so sit back, enjoy a few drinks and get lost in good music. The music styles vary in Leros bars, so there is something for everyone. You can find bars with international pop, rock or jazz music, but also alternative spots with traditional Greek music and bars with live music. Popular nightlife meeting points are Agia Marina and Lakki, and in these areas, you'll find funky cafe-bars and lively nightclubs, serving a wide variety of special cocktails and drinks. Famous Leros bars include Meltemi, Apothiki and Cafe Billies. Another trendy nightlife spot is Alinda, with bars playing loud music and creating a pleasant mood.

If you want to stay away from the party atmosphere and would rather enjoy a relaxing meal in a restaurant, then head over to villages such as Agia Marina, Lakki, Alinda and beach Ksirokambos and Vromolimnos. Here you'll find many Greek taverns serving mostly dishes of fresh fish or grilled meat.

Mylos Fish Restaurant will serve you delicious local dishes with a fabulous view of a traditional windmill and Agia Marina. Aloni is a great place for homemade meals, cooked from fresh ingredients. And Lyxnari is a must visit if you are a pizza lover.

If you have a sweet tooth, then don't miss out on the delicious pastries at 'Sweet Leros' in the village of Panteli, where you can sink your teeth into some of the island's handmade sweets and drinks. 'To Paradosiako' is another patisserie, which in Greek means 'The Traditional". You'll find contemporary and spiced up artistically made sweets, so aesthetically pleasing you may not have the heart to eat them!

Transport in Leros

The great thing about Leros is that it is an island, making travelling around incredibly easy. Distances can easily be covered with local buses. In particular, daily buses serve routes to Xirokambos, Lakki and Alinda from Agia Marina. There are also buses linking Platanos with Agia Marina. If you don't fancy hanging around at bus stops, then go ahead and rent out a car or motorbike to be able to move around in your own time.

The island's small airport only serves domestic flights from Athens. It is also possible to get there by ferry from Athens (Piraeus Port) or several other islands of the Aegean Sea (Rhodes, Simi, Patmos, Kos, Kalymnos, Mykonos, Paros and more), offering the opportunity to try some island hopping!
