In the northeastern Aegean Sea, between Lesvos and Thassos, is the island of Lemnos, also known as Limnos. The island's remoteness from Athens has allowed it to avoid the ravages of mass tourism, making it one of Greece's most underrated destinations. Its wide, empty beaches exist even during high season. Hephaestus, the God of Fire, was said to reside on Lemnos in Greek mythology, which makes sense given the island's rich volcanic history. Aside from beautiful beaches, Lemnos also boasts historic archeological sites, and other natural and man-made attractions.

Book your Lemnos car hire in advance with Enjoy Travel for the best deals! You’ll find prices for car hire in Lemnos starting from just €33 per day for a mini car like a Citroen C1 or similar. For something more spacious, prices average at €39 per day for an economy car like a Volkswagen Polo or similar.

Geography

Located in the North Aegean region of Greece, the island of Lemnos is a distinct municipality within the Lemnos regional unit. It is Greece's eighth-largest island, with an area of 477.583 square kilometers. More than 30 sandy beaches may be found on the island of Lemnos, which is largely level to the east, while the west, and notably the northwest, is rocky and hilly. Mount Skopia, with a height of 430 m, is the highest point. Both Myrina and Moudros are located on the island's west coast, and they form the island's two largest cities.

Climate in Lemnos

Lemnos has a mostly Mediterranean climate. The island's moniker "the wind-ridden one" refers to the island's strong winds, particularly in August and the winter months. Summer, from June to August, is the finest season to visit Lemnos for a beach vacation.

Culture

Hephaestus, the god of fire and volcanoes, is said to have lived on the island of Lemnos in ancient Greek mythology. A legend claims that Hera, his mother, tossed him off Mount Olympus, where the gods dwelt, because she found him to be an unsightly newborn. Upon arriving on the island, Hephaestus fractured his leg (or hip) and has been permanently disabled ever since. The deity returned the favour by teaching the islanders how to ironsmith.

Things to do

Visit the Church of Panagia Kakaviotissa

The remarkable Church of Panagia Kakaviotissa, or the Church Without a Roof, is located within a hollow on Mount Kakavos. You'll be surprised to see this old shrine, the most remarkable aspect of which is its natural stone dome in lieu of a roof. It was built by local monks and dates back to approximately 1305 AD. To get to this famous center of devotion, you'll have to navigate some difficult terrain. However, once you do, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the sea and stunning sunsets. On key Christian holy events, the church is packed with both residents and visitors.

Explore the Castle of Myrina

The Castle of Myrina, which stands atop a hill overlooking the capital city of Myrina on one side and Mount Athos and Ai Stratis on the other, is one of the most famous tourist sites on Lemnos. The construction of this remote Byzantine stronghold began in 1186 AD, with significant additions by the Venetians in the 13th century and afterwards the Ottomans. Today, you may take the hour-long hike up to the castle, which is well worth it for the stunning views over the city and bays from the summit.

Make a trip to the Cape Falakro

The geological beauty of Cape Falakro is another one-of-a-kind site in Lemnos. The red cliffs contrast sharply with the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea and the beach. From the town of Propouli, take a dirt road to Falakro, a superb location for breathtaking landscape photography. Get fantastic Instagram-worthy photos here, especially in the nights when the many colors cast their spell.

Eating Out

After a long day of touring, there are several fantastic restaurants and taverns on Lemnos where you may have a hearty meal. Here are some of our best picks. Mantella is a well-run pub in the little town of Sardes with a pleasant and friendly atmosphere that will help you relax. Traditional rooster, goat, and hog meals are served here, along with crisp local wines. Enjoy the excellent moustoukolika pasta, followed by a superb dessert. Grammophono, which is situated in the center of Myrina, is a famous restaurant where the public enjoys Greek flavors with contemporary twists. Enjoy their smoked meats and distinctive preparations like caramelized octopus or loukaniko, a pig sausage with prunes. They can all be washed down with Greek spirits like ouzo and tsipouro. Flomari is an amazing pub on Gomati beach with excellent location, cuisine, and service. Enjoy a romantic evening here while feasting on delicious Mediterranean food and gazing out over the Aegean Sea.
