Chase the Waterfalls at Mylopotamos

Milopotamos is a lovely traditional hamlet in Kythira's western region. The Neraida or Fonissa waterfall, set amid giant plane trees, is perhaps one of the nicest things to do here. The sparkling water falls from a height of 20 metres to form a small pond at the foot. You may swim here or wander around the waterfall to see the 22 abandoned water mills that were once active. Later, dine at Platanas tavern in Mylopotamos for a traditional Greek feast.

See the Katouni Bridge at Livaldi

The Katouni stone Bridge was built in 1826 in the Livaldi district and is a marvel to see. It is the biggest bridge ever constructed by the British in Europe, measuring 110 metres in length and supported by 13 gorgeous stone arches. It is a well-preserved artefact of the island's history, belonging to a complicated defensive system established by the island's foreign overlords. This bridge is associated with a wonderful local folklore that will move you. It is rumoured that its builder, British Commissioner Mackwell, fell in love with a beautiful Kythrian woman and had this bridge constructed so he could readily visit her.

Explore the Cave of Agia Sofia

The Cave of Agia Sofia, situated in the port of Kokkala near Milopotamos, is one of Greece's oldest and biggest caverns. Inside, summer temperatures hover about 16°C, with humidity hovering at 73%. It contains beautiful stalagmites and stalactites, as well as a beautiful church with an open roof dedicated to Saint Sofia. Local legends claim that her body was found here after she died. At the cave's entrance, you'll discover religious artefacts and a holy mural depicting Agia Sofia and her three daughters.

Kythira is served by Kythira Island National Airport (KIT) also known as Alexandros Aristotelous Onassis Airport. It is located around 20 km from the capital and receives domestic flights from Athens all year round.
