Guide to Kavala

Geography

Kavala, sometimes written as Kaválla, is a commercial town and seaport in the eastern region of East Macedonia and Thrace in northeastern Greece. It is located in the northern Aegean Sea, in the Gulf of Kaválas. It is situated on the Bay of Kavala, across from the island of Thasos and on the Egnatia motorway. The trip to Thessaloniki takes around an hour and a half, while the trips to Drama and Xanthi each take about 40 minutes. Alexandroupolis is around 150 kilometres to the west of the city.

Climate in Kavala

Kavala has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers, bordering on semi-arid and humid subtropical climates, with annual average precipitation of 460 millimetres. Seasonal snowfalls are rare but not unheard of. The humidity level is almost constantly high year-round due to its coastal nature. If you want to visit Kavala when it's the warmest, go in July, August, or June. Mid-July is often the hottest period of the year, with highs around 31.7°C and lows seldom falling below 20.9°C at night.

Culture

Kavala is a major economic city in Northern Greece, a hub for business, tourism, fishing, and oil-related enterprises, as well as a former hub for the tobacco industry.

In the past, the city has been known by two other names. Neapolis ('new city', like many Greek colonies) was the name of the city in antiquity. Christopoulos ('city of Christ') was renamed throughout the Middle Ages.

Things to do in Kavala

Explore the Castle of Kavala

The Castle of Kavala, or the Acropolis of Kavala as it is affectionately known, was built during the first quarter of the 15th century and rises atop the Panagia peninsula in the ancient town. The fortress was destroyed by the Turks in 1391, and the Ottomans rebuilt it with substantial defences. You will be transported back in time and space as you walk around within the fortress's internal walls. Visitors may observe the central circular tower, which was used to defend against invasions, as well as the arsenal and food store, which were transformed into a jail. The open-air theatre within the fortification regularly hosts theatrical acts and concerts.

Marvel at the Kavala Aqueduct

The Kavala aqueduct, also known as the Kamares, is one of the city's most recognisable features. It is a well-preserved edifice that dates from the 16th century and is most likely of Roman origin. Built to deliver fresh water to the ancient town, it now stands in all its splendour and is a popular tourist attraction. The architecture, particularly the arches from different perspectives, will wow you. Modern highways and gardens have contributed to the beauty of the location.

Visit the Imaret

The Imaret, or 'poor home,' was erected in the early 19th-century by Muhammad Ali Pasha, Egypt's ruler, who was born in Kavala. The amazing architecture, which was formerly an Islamic school with exquisite courtyards, ponds, and intricate roofs, is one of the most famous tourist attractions. After years of mistreatment, a well-known tobacco trade family from Kavala repaired the property and erected a hotel there. You may reserve a room and enjoy the exquisite atmosphere reminiscent of an early-nineteenth-century seminary.
