Culture

There are a plethora of hypotheses as to how Katerini came to be named. One of the most often accepted legends is that the town of Katerini takes its name from a modest church dedicated to Saint Catherine, which is also home to a cemetery with photographs dating back to the year 1831.

Visit the Dion Archaeological Park

The Archaeological Park of Dion is a prominent tourist destination in the area, located about 20 kilometres from Katerini, near the northeast foothill of Mount Olympus. History and archaeology fans will enjoy touring the shrines going back to the Hellenistic and Roman times. A market square, churches, workshops, bathhouses, and other structures may be found over an area of 150 hectares. The principal god worshipped here was Zeus, the “King of the God”s. As you walk around the site, you can sense the historical importance of the location, which was found in 1806 by English explorer William M Leake. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has been excavating here since the early 1920s.
