The metropolis of Euboea, Chalcis, is located at the narrowest point of the Euripus Strait. Chalcis is a name that dates back to antiquity, and in Greek, it means "copper/bronze," despite the fact that there are no mines in the region. It was also known as “Negropont(e)” in the late Middle Ages, an Italian term that has also been attributed to the whole island of Euboea. In part, Chalcis' recent expansion and success may be attributed to its appeal as a tourist destination for Athens and in part to the thriving agricultural industry, which sells animals and butter.

For a fun trip, book your Chalcis car hire in advance with Enjoy Travel for the best deals! You’ll find prices for daily car hire in Chalcis from just €23 for a mini car like a Fiat Panda or similar. An economy car such as a Volkswagen Polo or similar costs an average of €29 per day.

Culture

A reference to Chalcis may be found in Homer's Iliad, where it is referenced with rival city-state Eretria. Aulis, the south bank of the strait near the city, is also where the ships bound for the Trojan War assembled. Mycenaean chamber tombs at Trypa and Vromousa were discovered in 1910 by Papavasiliou's excavations. Several prominent cities in Magna Grecia and Sicily, including Naxos, Rhegion, Zankle and Cumae, were built by Chalcidice immigrants in the 8th and 7th century BC.

Things To Do in Chalcis

Visit the Archeological Museum

The Arethousa Archaeological Museum of Chalkida was inaugurated in 2021 and has a stunning permanent display coordinated by the Antiquities Ephorate of Evia. The museum, called the Arethousa, is named after the neighbouring freshwater thermal springs, which have been renowned for their medicinal virtues since ancient times. The museum is located in a former industrial building that has been designated as a historical monument in the Aghios Stefanos district. The museum's original structure, constructed in the early 1900s and serving as a reminder of the area's industrial emergence, is on display as part of the museum's permanent collection. Exhibits on display include items from the Greek islands of Evia and Skyros, as well as political, economic, and religious history.

Sunbathe at Paralia Liani Ammos beach

Swimming, sunbathing, and other beach activities are possible at the Paralia Liani Ammos beach, which is just a few minutes drive from Chalcis. While it is not the most beautiful beach in Greece, it is a useful urban beach that serves its purpose. In the evening, children will be playing and making sandcastles, while the elderly will go on their usual stroll. There's even talk that you may be able to kitesurf in this location.

Hike up to Karababa Castle

The Karababa castle is a one-of-a-kind attraction on the island of Evoia. It is the sole location that bears witness to the long and illustrious history of Chalkis-Negreponde, where Christians, Greeks, Venetians, Ottomans, and Jews coexisted together. The grounds are well maintained, and the views of Evia Island, which is right across the harbour from the mainland and where the castle is situated, are spectacular. The museum within the castle is highly interesting, with many one-of-a-kind artefacts, and it is very simple to navigate. There are stunning views of Halkida and the surrounding surroundings from this location. Because the castle remains somewhat intact, you can get an excellent sense of what it was like back then. Additionally, it is free to enter.

Eating Out in Chalcis

Greece is known for its delicious cuisine and the restaurants in Chalcis do not disappoint. Here are some of our favourites:

Stavento is an ideal setting for a romantic evening. The atmosphere is exquisite, and they conduct live music events all year. Chalkós is a small and pleasant restaurant. Sit outdoors and watch the sunset over the mountains throughout the summer. However, in the winter, the chambers inside with the fireplace and stone arches are just made for cuddling! If you like seafood or meat, you must visit Kapáki. Lupo Trattoria is the ultimate late-night dining option. Their salads and main courses are delicious. Their service is really fast. In the summer, you'll have a great view of the sea, and in the winter, it's comfortable and cosy.
