Ampelokipoi means 'vineyards', in Greek as the region was once famous for its grape growing. Five of the city's major boulevards today cut through the district of Ampelokipoi. One of which is Vasilissis Sofias, the most emblematic street of Athens. Many refugees settled in this area during the the Population Exchange between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s.
