Guide to Agistri

Geography

As a municipality in Greece's Islands area, the island of Agistri, sometimes known as Angistri or Agkistri, sits in the Saronic Gulf. The 3 major towns in Agistri are Milos, Skala, and Limenaria. Milos is the island's most populous settlement. A twenty-minute walk down the shore from Milos brings you to Skala, where tourist attractions and accommodations may be found. Limenaria is a little settlement located on the island's far eastern edge and sees very few visitors.

Climate in Agistri

Agistri enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, characterised by mild winters and scorching summers. We recommend visiting between the months of April and October, when the average temperature is between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius, since this is when the weather is most pleasant.

Culture

Agistri has a long and illustrious history. The island served as a battleground for conflicts involving many nations. Agistri was not only inhabited by Greeks, but also by Arabs and Byzantines.

Things to do in Agistri

Make a trip to Dragonera Beach

Visit the picturesque Dragonera Beach near the historic naval harbour Megalochori and the charming town Limenaria for one of the most spectacular things to do in Agistri. You'll be mesmerised by the pebble bay encircled by pine-topped cliffs. Just beyond the bay, there are coniferous hills which you can see when going for a quiet dip in the crystal clear blue waters. You can reach Dragonera Beach in around 20 minutes from Megalochori or 40 minutes from Skala by road.

Visit the Churches of Agioi Anargyroi and Virgin Mary

The Church of Agioi Anargyroi, located close to the beach at Skala, is one of the most photographed places on the island, with its whitewashed walls and dazzling blue dome. Apart from the feast of St Damian and Cosmos, when residents and visitors gather here, the church, which is dedicated to 3rd century saints, also organises a folk festival in July. The Virgin Mary Church is located on the top of a rocky pedestal in the northern section of the island and gives panoramic views of Skala Beach and Aegina Island. It is an ideal spot for spectacular sunset photography, and hikers flock to the place, especially around the time of the Assumption.

Go Horse Riding

The remote southern area of Agistri may be explored on horseback, which mau appeal to thrill seekers. Adults and children alike may learn the techniques of the sport while admiring the island's beautiful pine woods and expansive fruit plantations. A horseback ride along the shore and to the salt lake in Agistri's hinterland is also an option. Make sure you have a professional riding instructor.

Eating out in Agistri

Agistri boasts a variety of superb eateries and bars to suit every palate. Here are a few of our favourites. To Agistri is a seafood tavern and ouzeri in downtown Skala that serves authentic Greek cuisine. The breathtaking views of the Saronic Gulf complement the mouthwatering dishes sublimely. It is a welcoming family-run establishment where you will particularly enjoy the seafood dishes.

Avil, a popular pizzeria with both residents and travellers, is located on the beach route near Megalochori. It has a friendly atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor sitting arrangements, and it is a must-visit if you like Italian food. Ligo Krasi...Ligo Thalassa, which translates as "A little wine...A little sea," is a beautiful restaurant by the sea in Skala that serves exquisite fish and a vast range of local wines. It is the best spot in Agistri for a wonderful supper.

Agistri is served by the International Airport of Athens (ATH), which is the closest airport to the island.

Getting around Agistri

Traveling around Agistri is rather inexpensive. The public buses leave from Skala and take you to Megalochori, Dragonera, Limenaria, and Aponissos. There is also a nice tourist train journey from Skala to Megalochori and Dragonera. You may hire cars or motorcycles for day excursions across the island as well.
