Gibraltar North Front Airport (also known as Gibraltar International Airport and by IATA code GIB) is the main air hub for this famous British overseas territory which is a strategic bridge between Spain and North Africa.
Flying here is memorable because the main road to the land border with Spain (Winston Churchill Avenue) actually crosses the runway, so it has to be closed to traffic every time a plane is arriving or departing!
The main carriers serving GIB are EasyJet, Wizz Air, British Airways and Eastern Airways, with regular connections to destinations like London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh and Malaga.
There’s lots to see and do in Gibraltar, so whether you’re travelling here for business or pleasure, you can take some time to take the cable car to the top of the Rock, see the Barbary macaque apes which are probably more famous than the territory’s human inhabitants, dine out at restaurants featuring tasty cuisine from various cultures and soak up the sunshine and stunning natural environment.
There’s lots to explore here by car and Enjoy Travel makes Gibraltar North Front Airport car hire easy ̶ just pop your travel dates into our search engine and choose from a range of affordable deals from trusted partners.

Driving in and around Gibraltar Airport

You’ll see red post and telephone boxes and even good old British bobby’s (policemen and women) on the beat in Gibraltar, but for drivers there’s one major difference ̶ you drive on the right hand side of the road here because it shares a land border with Spain.
Here are a few further tips on hitting the road here:
- You have to be at least 18 years old to drive in Gibraltar and possess a full driving license issued in your country of origin. You also have to be at least 21 to hire a car here and have held your license for at least one year and please be aware that drivers under age 25 are sometime charged a surcharge.
- Seatbelts are mandatory for the driver and all passengers and you’re not allowed to use a mobile phone unless the system is truly hands-free and doesn’t distract you.
- You should carry your license and registration documents with you whenever you drive in Gibraltar and remember that you’re not permitted to toot your car horn in the city limits.
- There are only around ten petrol stations in the entire territory, so when you’re heading a little further afield, remember to fuel up first.
- The speed limit in Gibraltar is 50kph unless the signs say otherwise.
- Seville is a popular day trip from Gibraltar and there are lots of dynamic distractions in this lively Spanish city. The capital of Andalucía, this fine city boats a wealth of historical, cultural and architectural attractions, including the iconic cathedral, Plaza de Espana and the awesome aquarium (which kids adore!).
A useful guide to Gibraltar for GIB car hire customers

If you’re a Gibraltar resident hiring a car because your regular ride is being repaired or you require a certain type of vehicle for a few days, then we’re here to help.
But if you’re a first-time holidaymaker or business traveller, you probably want to know a little more about what you can anticipate.
In many ways, it’s true that Gibraltar is a little slice of England in the sun ̶ you need never worry about missing any important football fixtures here as there are plenty of British-style pubs offering big screen Brit sports and cafes serving everything from full English breakfasts to Sunday roasts.
There’s lots more besides though ̶ here are some more highlights:
- You can scale the Rock via cable car or on foot if you’re reasonably fit and either way you’re rewarded by amazing views of a world-famous spot where oceans and continents meet, as well as many unusual plants and flowers which grow at high altitudes.
- Barbary macaques aren’t the only amazing wildlife here. For starters, there’s lots of stunning sea life in the Strait of Gibraltar, including friendly schools of dolphins. Lots of dolphin and whale tours are available which take you up close and personal to these charming creatures, and you can pre-book online or make arrangements at your hotel. There are two main species of whale in Gibraltar ̶ Longfin Pilot Whales and Killer Whales, so if you’re lucky, you’ll see a jaw-dropping orca in action!
- If you’re looking for a legendary night out in Gibraltar (and not driving the next day!) then the main area for nightlife is Casemates Square, which is packed with cafes, pubs and restaurants. Grab a perfectly-poured pint of the black stuff at O’Reilly’s Bar, dance the night away at Dusk and treat yourself to a tasty kebab on the way home ̶ if it weren’t for the balmy evening air, you could be forgiven for thinking you’re back in Blighty for a second.
- Europa Point is the most southerly point in Gibraltar and it’s worth the effort of a visit to see the terrific Trinity Lighthouse and the ancient chapel of the Shrine of our Lady of Europe. The Harding Battery is also here (a military fortification built in 1859 and recently refurbished), an underground reservoir named the Nun’s Well is another unusual attraction and the Sikorski Memorial pays tribute to a famous Polish WWII general who died here in 1943. Across the water you can see beautiful views of the coast of Africa and Algeciras Bay.
- St Michael’s Cave is another famous Gibraltar attraction and it’s the biggest and most impressive of the territory’s 150 caves. Located 275m above sea level, it’s packed with dramatic stalagmites and stalactites, and was recorded in the history books back in 45 AD, although it’s known to have been a dwelling place for Neanderthal man more than 40,000 years ago. Meanwhile, for something really different, take in a live music, ballet or theatrical performance in the natural amphitheatre of Cathedral Cave.
- If you’ve got a head for heights, another thrilling attraction is the Skywalk, which his one of the most popular features at the Gibraltar Nature reserve and offers beautiful views from 340m above sea level. Another nearby attraction where you can take a spectacular selfie is the Windsor Suspension Bridge, a 71m long structure spanning a 50m gorge which is an ideal spot for catching one of the world’s best sunsets.
- Last but not least, for a spot of cathartic forest bathing in a gorgeous green space, don’t miss La Almeda Gardens, which are located at the Southport Gates at the end of Main Street and is blessed by lots of lush subtropical vegetation. This is also the site of the Almeda Wildlife Conservation Park, which is a bijou zoo set up to house animals confiscated by police and border authorities which are unable to return to their proper owners or habitats. Apart from the wildlife, this is often used as an unusual venue for live concerts and cultural events.
