Some basic elements of the highway code in Germany might be similar to conventions and rules in your home nation, but others will differ. Here are a few tips:

• If you’re from the EU, you should carry your home country driving license with you at all times. If you’re from outwith the EU, you need to carry your passport, car hire documents and insurance documents.
• You and your passengers must wear seatbelts at all times and it’s illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving. As you’d expect, drink driving is also prohibited, and you’ll face a severe penalty if you get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol. Drink driving laws are stricter than in the UK for example, with a maximum blood alcohol level of 0.05% and a zero-tolerance policy for drivers who are under 21 or have less than two years driving experience.
• Priority (or right of way) in Germany might be a little different to what you’re used to at home. At all junctions and crossroads, traffic coming from the right takes priority and, unless signs indicate otherwise, vehicles on a roundabout have right of way. Furthermore, you shouldn’t indicate when you enter a roundabout, but you should indicate prior to exiting and any emergency vehicle on the road has priority, even if its siren is not in use.
• Parking regulations are also strict in Germany so please be aware of the rules in place. For instance, your car is considered parked here if it’s stationary for over three minutes and you’re not allowed to park within 10m of traffic lights, by the kerb facing oncoming traffic, closer than 5m to pedestrian crossings, closer than 15m to a bus stop and, of course, in any area where there’s a parking prohibited sign.
