Compare Car Hire at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport

Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) is equidistant from Frankfurt and Luxembourg (70 miles / 120km from both), therefore if you’re landing here with Frankfurt as your main destination, hiring a car from Enjoy to get there is definitely a good idea.

The benefits of flying in and out of Hahn are the convenience, easy access by road, avoidance of the main busy cities, the small nature of the airport makes it easy and less stressful than the larger Frankfurt main airport and it's location is very convenient for around 5 million travellers all within 1 hour drive from the airport.

Formerly known simply as Hahn Airport, the name was changed in 2001 to Frankfurt-Hahn at the behest of Ryanair, one of its main carriers ̶ a move which caused some controversy because of the distance from HHN to this famous German city. Frankfurt-Hahn Airport is actually closest to the towns of Kirchberg (10km) and Simmern (12km) in the Hahn municipality of the Rhineland-Palatinate state.

About Frankfurt-Hahn Airport

Frankfurt Hahn airport
Frankfurt-Hahn departures area

Wizzair and Ryanair are the main carriers here and HHN served 1.4 million passengers in the most recent reporting year. It’s also a major cargo airport, benefitting from a 24/7 operating license and prime strategic location ̶ it’s located in the ‘Blue Banana’, a European economic hotspot which ranges from Marseilles to London via Switzerland, western Germany and Benelux. Furthermore, during the Cold War it was an air base for the US Air Force 50th Tactical Fighter Wing and airlines like United Airlines and Delta Air Lines still use it for military charter flights.

This is a small airport, but you’ll still find a decent range of facilities here, including a duty-free shop selling a fine selection of cosmetics, spirits and sweets, convenience shops selling snacks, drinks and local and international papers, and ATM machines to draw cash. You can also refuel yourself at the airport’s McDonald’s restaurant, try local tarts and pastries at BäckSnäck Jung, or sample an artisan brew and bagel at Coffee Fellows.

HHN prides itself on embracing the low-cost operational model based on high punctuality rates, rapid turnaround times, fast check-ins and short routes. Today it connects with more than 30 holiday destinations.

What is there to see around Hahn?

If you’re heading for Kirchberg, or even passing through, you’ll find a charming town full of beautifully decorated buildings, such as St Michaels Catholic Church, which is a gorgeous Late Gothic building with various architectural features constructed between the 14th and 18th Centuries, as well as the terrific timber framed Markplatz (town hall) which dates from 1698 and has a hipped mansard roof. Meanwhile, if you’re feeling active, there’s an indoor climbing hall, tennis centre, swimming pool and several cycling and hiking trails.

Once you pick up your vehicle at HHN (please remember to drive on the right in Germany) you’ll see all routes clearly signposted, including directions to Frankfurt and Luxembourg, and Enjoy works closely with trusted car hire providers at Frankfurt-Hahn airport so it’s easy to select the ideal vehicle for your travel party and itinerary. For instance, a mini-sized car like a Fiat 500 is small enough to nip around city streets but still seats four passengers in air-conditioned comfort, while a reliable Volkswagen Golf seats five and might feel slightly more robust for longer journeys. Alternatively, a compact-elite car like a Mercedes A-Class allows you to cruise to your destination in luxury and in a rugged Jeep Compass you’ll enjoy the elevated driving position and passengers are afforded an excellent view of the surrounding scenery as you roll through the Rhineland and beyond.

Road signage in Germany is clear and efficient, but if your hire car is fitted with Satnav, this can also prove useful, as can tuning into a radio station to hear traffic news and bulletins. Deutsche Welle is the German equivalent of the BBC and broadcasts in English, as does the British Forces Broadcasting Service and American Forces Network.

As stated, you drive on the right and there are two standard speed limits in Germany ̶ 50 km/h (30 mph) in urban built-up areas and 100 km/h (60 mph) outside urban areas. The autobahn speed limit is 130 km/h (80 mph) in some areas, but please be aware that many parts of the Autobahn have no speed limit whatsoever (indicated by a white circular sign with five diagonal black lines) and you can drive as fast as you feel safe. Please proceed with caution however, particularly when undertaking manoeuvres like overtaking.

Some basic elements of the highway code in Germany might be similar to conventions and rules in your home nation, but others will differ. Here are a few tips:

  • If you’re from the EU, you should carry your home country driving license with you at all times. If you’re from outwith the EU, you need to carry your passport, car hire documents and insurance documents.
  • You and your passengers must wear seatbelts at all times and it’s illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving. As you’d expect, drink driving is also prohibited, and you’ll face a severe penalty if you get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol. Drink driving laws are stricter than in the UK for example, with a maximum blood alcohol level of 0.05% and a zero-tolerance policy for drivers who are under 21 or have less than two years driving experience.
  • Priority (or right of way) in Germany might be a little different to what you’re used to at home. At all junctions and crossroads, traffic coming from the right takes priority and, unless signs indicate otherwise, vehicles on a roundabout have right of way. Furthermore, you shouldn’t indicate when you enter a roundabout, but you should indicate prior to exiting and any emergency vehicle on the road has priority, even if its siren is not in use.
  • Parking regulations are also strict in Germany so please be aware of the rules in place. For instance, your car is considered parked here if it’s stationary for over three minutes and you’re not allowed to park within 10m of traffic lights, by the kerb facing oncoming traffic, closer than 5m to pedestrian crossings, closer than 15m to a bus stop and, of course, in any area where there’s a parking prohibited sign.

A Useful Guide to the Rhineland and Frankfurt for HHN Car Hire Customers

Whether your ultimate destination is Frankfurt or you’re staying in the Rhineland, there’s lots to see and do. Here are a few highlights:

  • The Rhine Gorge is a stunning scenic driving route along a UNESCO-listed 65km stretch of the iconic Rhine River which is peppered with fairy-tale castles, historical sites and beautiful natural features. Dubbed the ‘Romantic Rhine Valley’, this area has had a huge influence on artists, writers and composers, and when you experience it for yourself, you’ll feel inspired too. Starting from Koblenz, follow the river south in the direction of the Rheinfels Castle in Sankt Goar and you’ll enjoy eye-popping views of the Lorelei rock across the river. From Bingen am Rhein, take the ferry over to Rudesheim am Rhein, a picturesque town with timbered houses, renowned for Riesling wine making. On the way back to Koblenz you’ll take in the awe-inspiring views from the other side of the valley and pass many more castles, of which Marksburg castle might be the most aesthetically pleasing.
  • Frankfurt is a fantastic city, there are endless attractions and entertainment options here and it’s an interesting mix of ancient and modern. This is German’s major financial centre and the Bankenviertel central business district stamps its authority on the skyline with 10 of the tallest skyscrapers in the whole of Germany. However, in the bustling city centre you’ll also find historical sites like the church which hosted Germany’s first democratically elected parliament and quirky neighbourhoods like Sachsenhausen, where the lively nightlife is fuelled by copious amounts of delicious Apfelwein. History buffs will be in their element here too ̶ the Museumsufer (Museum Embankment) boasts 12 museum which cover every sphere from art, architecture and film to ethnography and communication.

As you can see, Frankfurt-Hahn is a great gateway to the delights of the Rhineland and the eclectic city of Frankfurt, where interesting and inspirational activities await. This might be a small airport but it’s the perfect portal for business and pleasure in this outstanding part of the world.
