Things to do in Saint-Denis
Immerse yourself in history
Stroll the streets of the historic centre, which runs from the famous Barachois to the beautiful Jardin de l'État. Admire the Creole-style villas which date from the late 18th-century, as well as many other old houses and monuments full of historical charm. Hire a guide and see the place through the eyes of a local and hear the history and stories that really bring the streets alive. It is a great way to get to know the city.
Go for a Hike
Saint-Denis is surrounded by three surrounding peaks. Climbing to the top gives sweeping views of the city and its picturesque surroundings. For some of the best views, hike up Route de la Montagne (the Mountain Road). This is a scenic track that takes you up to the top of a lava cliff that plunges dramatically into the sea.
Eating out in Saint-Denis
The food scene in Saint-Denis is just as diverse as its residents. There is a distinctly French flavour but this blends with influences from Africa, China and India. If you want to try some of the regional specialities, look out for cari (a meat or fish stew) and rougail (a spicy tomato salsa).
