Saint-Denis, the administrative capital, is located at the northernmost point of Réunion Island. It lies in a basin at the mouth of the Saint-Denis River and is flanked by three mountains.
Saint-Denis has a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons. From December to April the weather is hot, humid and wet. July to October is classed as the dry season. This rich mélange is evident even in the culture, cuisine and architecture. There is a fascinating mix of religious buildings in Saint-Denis. Sitting side by side are mosques, Tamil temples, Buddhist temples, churches and a cathedral.
Things to do in Saint-Denis
Immerse yourself in history
Stroll the streets of the historic centre, which runs from the famous Barachois to the beautiful Jardin de l'État. Admire the Creole-style villas which date from the late 18th-century, as well as many other old houses and monuments full of historical charm. Hire a guide and see the place through the eyes of a local and hear the history and stories that really bring the streets alive. It is a great way to get to know the city.
Go for a Hike
Saint-Denis is surrounded by three surrounding peaks. Climbing to the top gives sweeping views of the city and its picturesque surroundings. For some of the best views, hike up Route de la Montagne (the Mountain Road). This is a scenic track that takes you up to the top of a lava cliff that plunges dramatically into the sea.
Eating out in Saint-Denis
The food scene in Saint-Denis is just as diverse as its residents. There is a distinctly French flavour but this blends with influences from Africa, China and India. If you want to try some of the regional specialities, look out for cari (a meat or fish stew) and rougail (a spicy tomato salsa).
Fly into Aéroport de la Réunion Roland Garros (RUN) which is 8km (5 miles) east of Saint-Denis. You can then take a taxi or bus to the centre of the city. The airport bus operates every day and the trip takes about 20 minutes.
Getting around Saint-Denis
Saint-Denis has a reliable public bus system. However, due to how compact the city is, the best way to get around is on foot. If you want to explore more of the island and get off the beaten track, then renting a car is a great idea and offers you more freedom. Some of the most reliable car hire agencies in Saint-Denis include Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Budget and Avis.
