Things to do in Rouen
Gaze up at historical monuments
Rouen is an important cultural capital with several important monuments. Start at the Rouen Cathedral, an architectural gem. Its construction started in the 11th century. Some of its sections are built in the Roman style while others show clear Gothic influences, particularly the façade, which actually became the subject of several extraordinary Impressionist paintings by Monet, which are displayed at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Another unique attraction in Rouen is The Gros Horloge, an astronomical clock dating back to the 14th century. Its mechanism is one of the oldest of its kind in France and the clock itself is installed in a Renaissance arch.
Spend an afternoon soaking in the culture
Other notable structures in Rouen include the Rouen Castle, probably best known as the place where Joan of Arc was tortured in 1431; the Church of Saint Ouen; the Palais de Justice, once the seat of Normandy’s legislature; the Church of St Maclou, built in a predictably Gothic style; the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, containing paintings by art world legends like Claude Monet and Géricault; the Musée Maritime Fluvial et Portuaire, which traces Rouen’s naval history; the Musée des Antiquités, home to relics spanning the Bronze Age to the Renaissance; and the Musée de la Céramique, displaying an extraordinary collection of faïence and porcelain, for which Rouen used to be famous in the 16th century.
