Guide to Rennes

Geography

Rennes is the capital of Brittany, the northwesternmost region of France. The city is located at the confluence of the Ille and Vilaine rivers.

Climate in Rennes

Rennes experiences a warm oceanic climate. Summer, the best time to visit, lasts from May to September. Winter lasts from November to February. Rainfall fluctuates every month, but on average, December is the wettest month.

Culture

The land that Rennes now occupies was once the site of a small Gallic village named Condate. In the centuries since the decline of the Celtic world, Rennes, and Brittany in general, have maintained their old culture in the face of French conquest. Today, two local languages are spoken in Rennes – Breton and Gallo, in addition to French, the national language.

Things to do in Rennes

Explore local history

Rennes is home to a multitude of historic sites, most of which are open to the public. Back when the city was the seat of the Duchy of Brittany, the local dukes and duchesses had to swear their oaths at the Mordelaises Gates. They were then crowned at the Cathedral Saint-Pierre de Rennes. Be sure to visit both places to get an idea of the old Breton grandeur. The cathedral’s organs, Roman altar, paintings and stained glass windows all merge to create a sublime atmosphere.

Appreciate the fine arts

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes, or Museum of Fine Arts of Rennes, is a 200-year-old gallery that displays some of France’s most exquisite artworks. When it was founded after the French Revolution, its collection consisted entirely of pieces that had been confiscated from the Church and nobility. Since then, however, the museum expanded its scope, coming to include pieces from painters such as Charles Le Brun, Matthias Stom and Maurice Denis, and drawings by prodigies like Leonardo da Vinci.

Eating out in Rennes

If you’re looking to read a book or catch up with a small group of friends on a quiet evening, head to Cafe Albertine and ask for one of their delectable sandwiches, pairing it with a piping hot coffee. For some fine dining, try Le Paris-Brest, which serves excellent Modern French cuisine, or Le Baron Rouge, with its great meat dishes and wine. More artsy tourists will love Le Galopin, a brasserie decorated with impressionist paintings and generous helpings of red furniture.
