Things to do in Le Mans
Stroll around the old quarter
Le Mans’ old quarter is called Cité Plantagenêt, a reference to the royal house which ruled England for more than three centuries. Within its Gallo-Roman walls, you can find romantic old houses and renaissance palaces, as well as a magnificent cathedral known as Place du Cardinal Grente. While within the old quarter, admire the striking sequence of flying buttresses that encircle the apse from Place des Huguenots or explore the stone age menhir was placed here in the 1770s.
Experience the oldest motor race in the world
It goes without saying that Le Mans’ main draw is its 24 Hours of Le Mans, the oldest motor race in the world. It is the ultimate test skill and endurance for driver and vehicle alike. If you’re a motorsport fanatic, attending this momentous event in June is almost a sort of necessary pilgrimage. If you’re visiting at other times of the year, there’s a museum dedicated to this fabled race. It contains 120 race-cars on show, out of which 40 have competed in the event. You can also see vintage filling stations, heritage cars, goggles and race suits from former champions.
Eating out in Le Mans
You can’t leave Le Mans without trying its culinary speciality: rillettes, a shredded pork pâté. You can get it at pretty much any charcuterie or butchery shop in town, however, we recommend trying it at La Vieille Porte. They also serve delicious foie gras, duck breast, and tartare. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, head to Distillerie du Sonneur to try their rillettes-based alcohol! Restaurant Le Grenier à Sel is the perfect place to go for a special occasion. They serve fine French cuisine, paired with high-quality wines in a tranquil setting.
