The Romans called Calais Caletum and its strategic position was exploited by Julius Caesar, who amassed a huge fleet here to carry five legions to invade Britannia. Fast forward a few centuries and it was captured by English King Edward III in 1347, remaining under English rule until 1558 when it was reclaimed by France. It suffered terrible bombing damage in WWII and its importance as a vital trade route between the UK and continental Europe grew throughout the post-war years.
