Pula is a major Croatian city located on the southern tip of the island of Istria. Istria was conquered by the Romans in 177 BC, and as a result, the architecture of the region is heavily influenced by that era. Despite the fact that Pula is noted for its historical characteristics, the city's unique and family-friendly services are what made it a popular tourist destination. The Pula Arena, one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world, is the most well-known of the city's numerous ancient Roman landmarks, and it is also the most visited. The city has a long history of winemaking, fishing, shipbuilding, and tourism, to name a few industries.

Guide of Pula

Geography

Pula, also known as Pola in Italian, is a significant port and industrial centre in western Croatia and is located on the Adriatic Sea. It is located at the southernmost point of Istria (peninsula), at the head of the Bay of Pula, and has a vast, practically landlocked port in which there is a naval installation as well as the Uljanik shipyards.

Climate in Pula

Pula has a transitional Mediterranean climate. The coldest months (January, February) average 6°C, while the hottest (July, August) average 23°C. The winters are moderate, although not as mild as on Croatia's southern coast. Summer is hot and bright, with occasional afternoon thunderstorms and wet days, most frequent in June. Pula is best visited in the spring and fall, especially from mid-April through mid-June and September. July and August are ideal beach months.

Culture

Make sure to sample some of the cuisine and wine of the Istria Peninsula while you're there, since it's just as renowned for its beauty. The cuisine is a blend of Italian and Slovak, with a lot of fresh fish and pasta on the plate. This region is also known for its wonderful, homegrown olive oil and wine.

Things To Do in Pula

Marvel at the Roman Colosseum

Pula's Roman heritage is visible in the spectacular and completely preserved Roman Colosseum that was erected here about two millennia ago. Despite pilferage, it is still one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres. Gladiatorial bouts that must have taken place here until the 5th century AD are readily imagined and visualised. Exploring the subterranean corridors and cisterns that rained fragrant water over the 25,000 spectators is thrilling. The Pula Amphitheatre now hosts some of Europe's most renowned live arts events and shows. Guided tours of the adjoining museum are also available.

Visit the Pula Aquarium

The largest aquarium in Croatia is housed inside the 130-year-old Austro-Hungarian stronghold Verudela near Pula. On a hot summer day, you and your children may explore the fort's stone tanks, which house local Croatian aquatic species. The turtle rescue centre and the area devoted to marine horses are two of the attractions here. Furthermore, children are awestruck by the shark tank, which is placed in the fortress's first atrium.

Tour the Temple of Augustus

The magnificent Temple of Augustus, erected in the second century BC and dedicated to the First Roman Emperor Augustus, stands on the forum. The temple, built on a tetrastyle prostyle porch of huge Corinthian columns, is the only remaining complex of the original temple trio. It was converted into a church under Byzantine authority and then used as a granary. It was destroyed by an Allied Forces air strike in 1944, but it was rebuilt in 1947. As you go around, you'll see that it's being used as a lapidarium, exhibiting Roman sculptures.

Pula offers a plethora of fantastic eateries that appeal to both guests and residents. Here are some of our top picks for a fantastic eating experience. Ribarska Koliba is a well-known seafood restaurant that was renovated in 2013. It is located immediately next to one of Pula's marinas. Savour the fresh seafood, shellfish, and squid that are traditionally cooked and reasonably priced. Amfiteatar has a very nice atmosphere and provides daily three-course meals as well as a la carte selections. You'll like the Mediterranean-Istrian cuisine, which includes pasta and risottos, as well as delectable desserts. Locals like Vodnjanka, which specialises in basic home food and provides outstanding service. You'll love the seafood and meat dishes. The restaurant also has an excellent wine selection.

Getting Around Pula

It is fairly easy to get around Pula by walking as it is a pedestrian-friendly city. The city’s main bus station, governed by Pula Promet, is found in Kolodvor.

Many visitors travelling through Croatia prefer to hire a car as it offers comfort, flexibility, and convenience. Croatia not only has a great network of well-laid roads but the landscapes on the way are incredibly scenic as well, often with stunning ocean views. If you’re travelling in a large group, consider hiring a minivan. You can also do a one-way hire, which means that you can pick up your vehicle in one city – say Zagreb – and drop it off in another – like Pula – before flying out. This would save you the hassle of having to drive it back.
