Along with this, people come from far and wide to see one of the main attractions: the sites where the Sound of Music was filmed. Absolutely everywhere you go in this gorgeous city is scenic, from the skyline to the majestic rolling hills – you can almost still hear Julie Andrews’ voice flow through you while you visit. There is so much to see and do in this gorgeous city that you simply don’t want to miss any of it – it truly is one of Austria’s most beautiful cities.

Things to do in Salzburg

The historic city of Salzburg is by far one of the most culturally and historically interesting places in the whole of Austria. There is so much to see and do here, you wont want to miss a thing – but it can be difficult to know where to start. Here are a list of some of our favourites.

Visit Altstadt on The Left Bank

Split in two by the Salzach River, the city has a unique image unmatched by anywhere else in the world. The cobblestoned streets of the Old City is filled with tourists who are looking for that Instagrammable moment they can’t find anywhere else. If you begin your walk at the Residenzplatz, which is home to 16th century architecture, the Salzburg Cathedral and the Residenz Palace Museum. From there, you will want to head to St Peter’s Abbey, which dates way back to the 7th century. The historic streets you find in the city are unlike any other, so be sure to check out some local walking tours too to really immerse yourself in the experience.

Learn all about the infamous musician at Mozarts Geburtshaus

If you know a lot about the area, you will know that the infamous Wolfgang Mozart was born here. Now, his birthplace has been perfectly preserved and is home to a museum dedicated to the musician. Mozart was a child prodigy and discovered his love of music within the walls of the Mozarts Geburtshaus, and here you can see his first violin on display. If you, yourself, are a musician looking for some inspiration or just a fan of the famous child prodigy, this museum is sure to spark some fascination. With an on-site gift shop, you can also buy yourself or your loved one something to remind yourself to work hard at your goals, like the young Wolfgang did to achieve his dreams.

Over-look the entire city at Festung Hohensalzburg

For a spectacular view over the whole of the Old City, you will want to head to the Festung Hohensalzburg. The 11th-century castle has been standing for nearly one thousand years and was a medieval fortress which stood as one of the largest of its kind in the whole of Europe. Taking a tour of the grounds will take you back in time and make you truly realise just how incredible the area and history of the city really is. Once in the Golden Hall, you will feel part of history and let your imagination run wild to a time when Kings and Queens may have dined in that very hall. From the very top of the castle, you will also have a magnificent view of the entire city that will take your breath away.

Head on a stroll through the Schloss Mirabell

The absolute gem of the city can be found within the gorgeous halls of Mirabell. The endlessly beautiful gardens and architecture is a sight to be seen, especially as it has been considered to be one of the most luxurious places in the whole of Austria. Again, you may recognise this location from the Sound of Music, and the land has been kept in pristine condition ever since. You will be able to wander around the great hall, soak up the history of the area, and even learn about Green mythology on your travels too.

Eating Out in Salzburg

Famous for its authentic Austrian foods and traditional dishes, Salzburg is a must for eating out. You will find traditional treats such as Schnitzel and strudel, which are both prime examples of their great food. Each restaurant you go to will have their own approach to Austrian foods, but each take great pride in their dishes. Most restaurants too also try to shop as locally as possible, to keep their dishes authentic and close to the original dishes that have evolved over time in Austria.

No matter what you fancy while you’re in the city, we guarantee you will find it here. Austria is known for having great options, whether you’re looking for sweet or savoury foods – they have fantastic options no matter where you choose to eat. Just remember that Austrians usually add between 5 and 15% to the bill so it is rounded up.

Transport in Salzburg

Getting round Salzburg is pretty easy, thanks to their network of public transport. The buses are extremely affordable and reliable, most of the time. The city is also home to a local trainline called Lokalbahn which runs all the way to Lamprechtshausen and Oberndorf and is very regular, generally speaking.

If public transport isn’t your thing, you might want to consider hopping on a taxi, which can either be hailed from the roadside or booked online or at a taxi rank. Taxi drivers are generally very friendly and happy to give you advice on the local area too. Although it is possible for you to hire a car in Salzburg, you may also find it a little difficult. Road signs are typically written in small font, and there are certain requirements for your car you need to ensure you adhere by, depending on the time of the year. For instance, if you plan to drive from October to April, you will need to make sure your car is equipped with snow tires for your safety.
