Geography

An unassuming suburb within the city of Gold Coast, Southport is home to the city’s central business district and plays an important commercial and administrative role in the Gold Coast region. Southport is also the sixth-largest city in Australia. Southport is situated on the northern tip of the Gold Coast, which is an important metropolitan region in the state of Queensland. It is perched on Broadwater, an estuary created by water deposits from the Nerang River.

January is the hottest month, with an average high temperature of 26.4°C (79.5°F) and a low temperature of 23°C (73.4°F). The most humid months are January through March, with an average relative humidity of 77%. July is the coolest month, with an average high temperature of 21°C (70°F). Although Southport is an ideal tourist destination year-round, most people tend to visit between May and November.

Culture

Southport was originally called Nerang Creek Heads, after the Nerang River, before it was renamed by the mayor of Brisbane, Thomas Blacket Stephens, after a resort in Lancashire. Several Aboriginal tribes fished and lived in the region before Europeans arrived, and they would hold initiation rites at locations such as Coomera. John Oxley explored the area in 1799 and 1802, while Captain Cook and John Bringle also made trips along the coast in 1770. Beginning in the 1840s with timber-getters and continuing into the 1860s with farmers, European settlers flooded into the region. Though sugar cane was being cultivated by the late 1870s, the American Civil War opened up a lucrative market for cotton. The existing townsite was surveyed in 1874, and it is believed that the first white immigrants arrived the following year, in 1869.

Take a leisurely stroll around Main Beach and The Spit

A man-made reef was built along a stretch of beach known as Narrow Neck to deflect waves from Main Beach. There is a lengthy stretch of shoreline greenery, known as The Spit, on the eastern side of Seaworld Drive, where you'll find a few parking lots with easy access to picnic sites and grills. Hollindale Park has additional walking paths, public restrooms, public telephones, and picnic areas near the southern end of Seaworld Drive. Doug Jennings Park can be found in the northwest corner of The Spit, and just across from it is a jetty that extends 500 metres out into the ocean and is quite popular with fishermen. The Mirage Marina offers a wide variety of cruises, charters, and watersports rentals. Fisherman's Wharf, located on the Mirage complex's northern side, has a wide variety of dining, shopping, and entertainment options.

With its back to the beach and its front to The Broadwater, Sea World is a massive marine park covering 25 hectares (the largest of its kind in Australia). It has rides, performances, and attractions, and some of the rides, such as the Three Loop Corkscrew and Lasseters' Lost Mine, are sure to give you the thrills. Spend a day at Warner Bros. Movie World

In addition to being located on the Pacific Motorway, Warner Bros. Movie World Theme Park can be found in Oxenford. Simply said, Warner Bros. Movie World is a cross between Disneyland and Universal Studios. Entertainment ranges from spontaneous street performances to a daily stunt display. In addition to the Scooby Doo roller coaster, there is also the Wild West Falls ride, Looney Tunes Village, and the Road Runner rollercoaster. Animation characters from different programmes, such as Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam, Daffy Duck, and Sylvester from the Warner Bros. cartoon team, stroll down the main street to entertain the audience, much as they do at Disneyland.
