Geography

Noosa Heads is located around 160 kilometres north of Brisbane on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland. Noosa Heads is nestled in the headland of the Noosa National Park and is positioned beautifully on the peaceful shores of Laguna Bay. Also Noosa Heads is bounded by Lake Weyba in the south and Noosa River to the north. Noosa is integral however only one part of the entire Noosa Shire. Climate in Noosa Heads

Water temperatures are beautifully warm at 24-25°C. In Autumn, March to May, the weather although still likely to have some precipitation the temperature is around 20°C to 28°C. Fun can still be had in the water with ocean temperatures of 22°C. June to August are supposed to be the winter months, but with a temperature range of 11°C to 22°C the days are pleasant, mild and relatively dry. Water temperature drops to about 20°C. Warm sunny clear blue skies are typical of the Spring months, September to November. The temperature ranges from 18°C to 28°C and rainfall is at its lowest. Water temperature starts increasing to around 23°C.

Culture

The original inhabitants of the Noosa Shire were the nomadic Aboriginal people Kabi Kabi/ Gubbi Gubbi people who were attracted by the seasonality and abundance of food sources. In the 1820s escaped European convicts or shipwreck survivors discovered the region and the Aboriginal People welcomed them into their culture. Timber felling and milling in 1860s saw the development of townships such as Tewantin and the use of the Noosa River for shipping. The discovery of gold in the Noosa Hinterland in the 1870s bought growth to many townships in the inner areas and the expansion of a port in Tewantin for more export along the Noosa River. Population of the Shire increased significantly with the improved access to the gold field assisted by the construction of the Noosa Brisbane Road. Development of Noosa Heads, Hastings Street and Noosa National Park is documented to have started in the 1920s. The Noosa Heads Surf Club originated as a tent on the beach at Laguna Bay and now has a prime beachfront position. Additional Koalas were released into the Noosa National Park to increase the population. In the 1930s shops, Laguna House Lodgings, café and a post office were built on the sand dunes in Hastings Street. Noosa Shire declared in 1970s that no high-rise development be undertaken in Noosa Heads. Since then the rapid but refined growth has been within biosphere and conservation guidelines resulting in a popular cultural tourist destination of natural beauty.

Things To Do in Noosa Heads

Noosa Heads provides a variety of beaches to suit all. Main Beach on Laguna Bay in front of Hastings Street is perfect for families as the beach is patrolled and the surf is generally gentle. For the more experienced surfers ride the waves created from the headland at First Point. Deck chairs, shade equipment, surfboards and stand up paddle boards are available for hire. With amenities close by families are comfortable to enjoy endless hours of fun. A pandanus, palm tree and grass lined boardwalk is adjacent to the beach area. It is very popular with locals and tourists to stroll or sit and enjoy the view or a refreshment. Along the boardwalk just over First Point there is the more tranquil Little Cove Beach. Exploring further afield into the National Park the beaches become more secluded and the waves larger so one needs to be selective of one’s water capabilities.

The Noosa National Park is at the headland. The Day Centre provides amenities and maps with all tracks well signed. Decisions need to be made on which options, coastal, inland rainforest or a combination walk. Coastal Walk will give you an ocean view at all times to watch waves crash over rocks, smell eucalyptus trees, hear whip birds call, watch surfers catch waves, people possibly swimming at Tea Tree Bay, looking for Koalas and maybe spotting a dolphin, sea turtle or whale. Banksias, she-oaks, giant Kauri pines and flourishing wild flowers are some of the Australian natives found in the rainforest on the Tanglewood Walk.

Noosa Hinterland is a scenic escape with mountain views containing boutique vineyards, historic pubs, galleries, cosy cottages and much more to explore. A natural saltwater lake in Cootharabar near Noosa Everglades is a great spot for fishing, kayaking or just swimming. The hinterland provides plenty of opportunity to stretch the legs with hiking tails through beautiful eucalyptus bush land. Mount Tinbeerwaha 265m volcanic rise offers 360° ocean and hinterland views that are stunning at sunrise or sunset. The beauty of this walk is that it is 500 metres return to the lookout. Culture is highlighted in many sections, particularly in the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre where local and national artists works are displayed. When timing your hinterland visit remember the Eumundi Market on a Wednesday and Saturday. The 600 stalls cover food to antiques, fashion, collectibles and live music. Even the town itself is captivating and worth spending time just strolling through history.

Eating Out in Noosa Heads

Spoilt for choice and all dietary requirements covered one can sit back and relax at whatever meal one chooses. Try a coffee, fresh fruit or takeaway bircher muesli from a pop-up cart on the boardwalk watching early morning swimmers in Laguna Bay before walking to the Noosa National Park. There is the option of an early morning swim followed by a more substantial breakfast of honey roasted pumpkin, poached free ranged eggs, quinoa, house pickles, broccoli pesto, avocado and beetroot hummus at Aromas. Refuel the body from the morning activity on the beach with a build your own personal poke bowl at Raw And Rice. One option is sticky mushroom edamame, bean sprouts, herbs, sauce of choice on brown rice. Dinner options are numerous. At Bistro C on the beach the menu changes seasonally. Whilst nightly they have a specials board worth considering, save room for the lime coriander calamari and the fresh local seafood spaghetti that features Moreton Bay bugs. El Capitano is a surprise venue waiting to be explored. Think it is just pizza, but it is much more. Organically locally inspired produce forms a menu that is an enjoyable mouth watering read. Whilst you might start with Mooloolaba grilled tiger prawns before selecting a pizza or two of your choice. Save room for dessert, for nearby Massimo’s Gelateria serves up homemade ice cream and sorbet. A great way to finish a night or to cool down during the day. You will find it will become a daily ritual and with many flavours to try you will soon find your favourites.

Transport

Sunshine Coast Airport is a 30 minute drive to Noosa Heads and serves the domestic traveller within Australia. Airport transport options available include rental cars, taxis, uber, bus transfer, public buses and hotel shuttles. Brisbane Airport, Queensland’s domestic and international terminal is 1 hour 30 minutes transfer to Noosa Heads. Again a number of bus services, hotel transfers and car hire are available.
