Geography

Geelong, a major port in the Australian state of Victoria, is situated on the left bank of the Barwon River and the eastern end of Corio Bay, around 65 kilometres (40 miles) from Melbourne, the state capital. Geelong, Victoria's second biggest city, is also Australia's second-fastest-growing. Providing a transport corridor past the Central Highlands, Geelong is often referred to as the "Gateway City" for the western Victorian regional centres that surround it, including Ballarat in the northwest, Torquay, the Great Ocean Road, and Warrnambool in the southwest, and Hamilton, Colac, and Winchelsea to the west. Melbourne lies to the northeast.

Geelong has consistent weather and four seasons. Warm summers and mild to chilly winters characterise its temperate marine environment, along with mostly westerly breezes, varying clouds, and moderate precipitation. The warmest month is February, while the coolest is July. The months of November through March are ideal for a trip to Geelong due to the pleasant weather and long days.

Culture

The Wadawurrung, or Wathaurong, an Aboriginal tribe of the Kulin nation, are the traditional proprietors of the land on which Geelong is built. The Wathaurong called the area Djillong, which may have meant "land," "cliffs," or "tongue of land"; the Europeans who settled there in 1827 gave it the name Geelong.

An incredible collection of exceptional Aboriginal artwork and cultural artefacts is on exhibit and for sale. Enjoy a day trip to the nearby Serendip Sanctuary

In the Western Volcanic Plains sits the Serendip Sanctuary. Since the first European settlers arrived, the local wildlife had disappeared.
