Geography

Andorra is a tiny landlocked microstate nestled high in the eastern Pyrenees, sandwiched between France to the north and Spain to the south. Despite its small size of just 468 square kilometres, the country's terrain is almost entirely mountainous, with narrow valleys carved out by rivers that eventually feed into Spain's Ebro basin. Its capital and largest city, Andorra la Vella, sits at over 1,000 metres above sea level.

Trinxat, a comforting dish of cabbage and potato fried with bacon, is a local favourite, as is escudella, a slow-cooked meat and vegetable stew traditionally eaten in winter. Game meats like wild boar and venison also feature heavily on menus, alongside strong Catalan influences such as cured meats and crusty bread. Given its duty-free status, Andorra is also a great place to pick up fine wines and spirits to take home.

Airport

Andorra has no airport of its own. Most visitors fly into Barcelona–El Prat Airport in Spain or Toulouse–Blagnac Airport in France, both roughly a two-to-three-hour drive from the border.

Getting Around Andorra

Andorra has no railway network, and while a limited bus service connects the main towns, it isn't designed for exploring the country's more remote valleys and mountain villages. Given the winding mountain roads and the need to cross between France and Spain to even reach the country, hiring a car is by far the easiest way to get around and make the most of your trip.
