Located on the southern coast of Albania, resting on a bay that marks the meeting of the Adriatic and the Ionian seas, lies a City dating back to the 6th Century B.C making it one of the oldest Cities of Albania. Vlore is the third most populous City in Albania, located just 50 miles from the boot heel of Italy and 100 miles north of Greece. They say that if you dream to retire in Italy but your pocket cannot handle the pricey Italian cost of living, then look no further than Vlore. There's a heavy presence of Italian culture in this City, from Italian coffee and food, to even the language being widely spoken. You'll feel as though you are in the very country of Italy, just your pockets will be a lot happier!

With over 300 sunny days a year, this City gives tourists the opportunity to fully soak in its beauty & atmosphere no matter what time of year! Now Vlore isn't the place that hosts a lively nightclub scene or posh shopping with 5-star dining, but you'll find incredible beaches with turquoise waters, plenty of outdoor activities, vibrant markets, stunning mountains, deliciously prepared local foods, the list goes on! The predominant religions are Islam and Christianity, so you’ll hear the call to prayer from the local mosque as well as the bells of the Catholic church ringing in the hour. The presence of both these religions is reflected in the hospitable and caring nature of the people of Albania - they'll be some of the most sincere and welcoming people you would have come across.

Albania boasts a seriously intense history, from the Greeks and the Romans, through to the Ottomans and its years under a madcap socialist dictator. Vlore holds historical importance for Albania, having hosted its First National Assembly, where Albania declared independence from the Ottoman Empire on November 28, 1912.

Things to do in Vlorë

Independence Monument

As mentioned before, Vlore is a special city for Albanians, as this is where the country declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire at the start of the 20th century. So, stopping by at the independence monument and museums is a must in order to get a little bit more of a feel of what it means to be Albanian. The monument is the centrepiece of Vlore’s Square, designed by Mumtaz Dhrami, a creative 20th-century sculptor who completed plenty of work around Albania during the communist era. His Independence Monument represents the socialist-realist style, so today is a reminder of both Albania’s independence and the country’s difficult post-war years. You can take a seat on one of the nearby benches surrounded by beautiful palm and pine trees, and just enjoy watching the City go by.

Muradie Mosque

This is Vlore’s main mosque, a stunning, ancient piece of architecture built by the Ottomans. This mosque holds great importance for Muslims & the City, as not only has it been preserved for almost half a millennium, but it also survived Albania's tough post-war communist regime where many religious buildings were shut down.

Orikum

Seeing as Vlore is famous for its turquoise waters and beautiful sandy beaches, it would be criminal if you were to leave the City without having had a lazy day on at least one of the beaches! Orikum beach is a gleaming white beach, only five kilometres to the south and has an attractive sweep of white pebbles. On a sunny day, the seabed reflects the light, causing the crystal-clear waters to glimmer & sparkle. If you have little ones, then you'll be pleased to hear that Orikum beach has a large shallow area, making it perfectly safe for even the littlest swimmers to splash around. As you're lazing on a sunbed, be prepared to have your breath taken away by the spectacular backdrop of the 2000-metre-high Mount Athanasious towering behind the town, which during Spring & Autumn is a fantastic climb to the summit.

Eating Out in Vlorë

With Greece and Italy in close proximity, the presence of both cultures is represented in Vlore's delicious cuisine. Vlore has a special location where tall mountains meet the sea, so this blend of terrains gives this City's cuisine a unique twist! Vlore is also a port, so as you can imagine, the seafood is exquisite! Particularly the mussels, lobster and shrimp. In fact, many have stated that the seafood in Vlore is some of the best in Albania!

Because of Vlore's coastal and mountainous areas, the products are taken from dairy animals which are raised in the mountains. Restaurants take great pride in serving their roast lamb, which has been nurtured on mountain pasture and roasted slowly over charcoal pits. Grilled meat is characteristic of Vlore, and is found in pretty much every restaurant. Once you've sunk your teeth into their succulent meat, you'll realise you've never had anything like it, as the closeness of the sea and the quality of pastures give the meat in this area an incomparable taste. Lamb from Karaburun cooked over an open fire is particularly delicious.

Cattle farming is an important local industry and this produces yoghurt which is a must try during your stay in Vlore. The yoghurt is produced traditionally and is different than yogurt produced in most of Europe. It's served with many dishes, particularly as a savoury sauce when combined with garlic and cucumber.

Some examples of traditional Albanian dishes are: Byrek - a flaky pastry that is filled with either field greens or just as a milky pie. The most important ingredients are fresh milk, flour, and field greens. Harapash - cooked with corn flour, the intestines of lamb, cheese and butter. Looks a lot like porridge Raki - Alabnia's traditional alcoholic drink. Typically grape-based, but you can also find raki made from blackberries and plums.

Transport in Vlorë

Vlore is a great City to see predominantly on foot. Not just because it is the easiest and cheapest way of getting around, but also because of the fantastic weather making exploring the City so much more enjoyable. If you do need to rest your feet at times, then not to worry as public transport is also available. There isn't a train, metro or subway option in Vlore, however the City has plenty of public buses, taxis and mini buses known as furgons. Make sure to check the timetables as the buses only run at certain times, so the most convenient way to travel is by taxi. However, Albania overall is incredibly cheap, so any form of transport that you use will be pretty affordable.

If you feel like having a lot more freedom with your travelling, then try exploring the option of renting your own vehicle. Vlore has a wide variety of vehicles that can be rented at affordable prices, such as bicycles, electric scooters, motorcycles, campervans and boats. If you have quite a lengthy stay, then hiring a car may be the best option.
