Guide to Hamilton
Geography
Hamilton sits on the western end of Lake Ontario, just over 9 miles from the nearby city of Burlington. The Niagara Escarpment divides it into ‘higher’ and ‘lower’ sections.
Climate
Like most cities around the Great Lakes, Hamilton’s climate is tempered by the waterfront. The warm summer lasts from June to September, and winter, from December to February, is damp and chilly. To avoid traveling during the peak season, visit in spring.
Culture in Hamilton
The city in its current form was formed by absorbing five nearby municipalities with the old town of Hamilton, which was first named after the merchant-turned-politician George Hamilton.
Things to do in Hamilton
Marvel at rare flora and fauna
The Royal Botanical Garden, situated 10 minutes from the city center, is a great place in which to go hiking or birding – that is, after you finish admiring the 4 cultivated areas. Hendrie Park, Rock Garden, Lake Garden, and Arboretum all offer stunning displays of horticulture. See if you can find rare species like the red mulberry tree! The campus is about 2400 acres large and has as many varieties of plants.
Trace the history of aviation in warfare
Just after you land in Hamilton, be sure to check out the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. The museum, which is fairly close to the main airport, boasts a collection of 47 old planes, each with its own little story. Some of them date back to the Battle of Britain while others were used during the First World War. You can even fly some of the planes! To do this, book in advance – but only if you have prior experience operating aircraft.
Explore a neoclassical mansion
Built in 1835, Dundurn Castle is now the centerpiece of the Dundurn National Historic Site. It looks like something out of ancient Rome, but we assure you it had 19th-century gas and lighting from the very beginning. The grounds are like a large museum, with multiple displays from European history – medals, uniforms, military vehicles, and so on – while the mansion itself offers a glimpse into upper-class life in the 1800s.
Eating out in Hamilton
For a taste of distant China, but with Canadian influences, try the buffet at Mandarin Restaurant – the roast beef and noodle dishes are particularly good. Much as its name suggests, The French is a bistro that serves mostly French food, although it does offer some north African dishes as well. We recommend you start with the salade lyonnaise and move on to the trout almondine. Wild Orchid makes some of the best seafood pasta and steaks in town. At Aberdeen Tavern, which specialises in Canadian brunches, find out what makes Hamiltonians feel at home.
Hamilton Transport
Airport
The city is serviced by the John C. Munro International Airport (YHM), which is large enough to draw some of the air traffic off Toronto.
Local transport in Hamilton
Within Hamilton, you can take the local Hamilton Street Railway buses to get around. Alternatively, renting a car is also a popular option among those who want greater comfort and flexibility to go off the beaten track.
