Where can I compare rental vehicles and how do I get the best deal?
Canada’s unique blend of urban attractions and gorgeous great outdoors calls for a wide range of car rental options. That’s why we have makes and models to satisfy every budget, taste and requirement.
Which cars are on offer and how do I get the right one for my budget?
Here’s the lowdown on the car rental categories in Canada that our customers can’t get enough of:
Jeeps: Canada’s expansive open roads, rugged scenery and unique natural attractions are the perfect match for the Jeep brand’s tough design and dedication to adventure. If you fancy getting behind the wheel of one of these beauties, many Canadian car rental providers offer models like the Cherokee, Renegade and Compass.
Mini: These small cars are the most affordable Canadian car rentals you’ll find. You won’t max out your credit card filling the gas tank and they’re comfy for couples or lone travellers. The Toyota Aygo and Fiat Panda are two pretty sweet picks from this category.
Premium: Want to roll out under those big blue Canadian skies in luxury and comfort, with a ride that’s smooth as silk? When you want to splash out a little with the finer things on four wheels, premium car rental models like the Nissan Maxima are the high-performance treat you deserve.
Compact: Compact rental cars in Canada cost a little more than mini or economy categories, but they’re more spacious, with plenty of room for luggage in the trunk and comfy seating for four persons. If a compact car sounds right up your street, choose a model like a Kia Rio or Hyundai accent.
Economy: The next step up from mini-sized vehicles, although they’re still bijou, economy rental cars can afford slightly more space, they have low fuel consumption and are affordable to rent. If this sounds like your category of choice, models include the Chevrolet Spark and similar.
Standard: Standard cars for rent in Canada include models like the Volkswagen Jetta and Chevrolet Malibu. They represent another incremental increase in size and can cater for a total of five people. Standard cars can cope with the mix of city and country driving many visitors have planned.
Based on our latest rentals some of these facts may come in useful:
- Unlike many Commonwealth countries, you drive on the right of the road in Canada. You should always wear your seatbelt here and never drive under the influence of alcohol.
- The most popular car is a Toyota Corolla, with an average price of $ 24.64 (CAD), but the cheapest on record was $ 13.40 a day in the last 12 months.
- Nissan Rogue, Jeep Wrangler and Ford Escapes are very popular rental cars, with the average overall rental price for Canada at $ 32.52 (CAD) per day in the last 12 months.
- Black ice can be common on the road in Canada during winter, so please proceed with caution and use winter tyres if possible. Watch out for wildlife like deer, moose and elk, which are all large and cause a considerable hazard for cars during the day and particularly at night when they can be startled by your headlights.
- The speed limit on Canadian motorways is usually 100km/h but this rises to 120km/h in British Columbia and is as low as 90 km/h in Prince Edward Island. The limit in built-up areas is 50 km/h and lower in roads around schools. Take your time and observe the speed limit signs as they are always clearly displayed.
- Canada is a huge country and some road trips between towns and cities involve very long distances. So make sure that you plan your journey to take regular rest stops, ensure that you have your mobile charged and warm clothing available in case of emergencies, fully fuel your gas tank and map out the location of gas stations along the way.
- Remember that if you’re driving in Quebec, you might see some road signs in French. Some phrases that are useful to remember are ‘arrêt’ meaning ‘stop’, entrée interdit’ meaning ‘no entry’ and ‘route barrée’ meaning ‘road closed’.
