Things to do in Maitland
Go wine-tasting in the valley
While visiting Australia’s oldest wine region, you cannot miss trying some of the best vinos produced here, such as Semillon. The best way to go about this is to join a tour organised by the wineries, like Tyrell’s (established in the Hunter Valley since 1858!) and Lisa McGuigan Wines (known for exquisite Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris wines).
Visit a local art gallery
Maitland Regional Art Gallery is housed in a gorgeous heritage building dating to 1910. Inside, the warm brick contrasted with the exposed industrial features and polished concrete create an interesting backdrop for the artworks, which draw from all disciplines and mixed media. One of their most popular exhibits, interestingly, is a collaboration between seven local high schools to produce a display called ‘Stories from Wonnarua County.’
Eating out in Maitland
For delicious handmade pasta paired with robust red wine, the elegant and warmly-lit Fratelli Roma is a popular choice. Chinh's Vietnamese Restaurant serves fresh and flavourful Vietnamese cuisine. Their portions are generous and prices are reasonable. The Whistler is one of Maitland’s highest-rated restaurants. Pair their southern fried chicken wings with one of the 16 craft beer options. In their own words, they are poised to ‘rival any underground Melbourne hipster bar, [and] you'll be sure to find something [there] that tickles you right where it feels good.’
