Katherine is still an important tribal meeting place and there’s now a permanent base for the Walpiri community at Katherine East. The River (and subsequently the town) was named Katherine by explorer John McDouall Stuart after the daughter of wealthy farmer James Chambers, was connected by telegraph in 1872 and boosted by the discovery of gold at Pine Creek and Mount Todd over the next 20 years. Today this famous frontier town has plenty of parks and green spaces as well as a wealth of natural attractions.
