Things to do in Karratha
See some of the world’s oldest rock art
The Burrup Peninsula is home to massive rock formations, meagerly vegetated slopes, and imposing cliffs. It used to be the dwelling place of the Jaburara people, who created some of the largest, oldest, and most significant rock art in existence. You can enter Murujuga National Park, situated at the north end of the peninsula, or take a boat to one of Dampier Archipelago’s offshore islands if you’re interested in seeing more such sites of archaeological and historical significance.
Swim in sublime, sparkling waters
On the bayside of the Burrup Peninsula is Hearsons Cove, one of the best swimming holes in the region. You can also walk across miles of mudflats during low tide, watch Staircase to the Moon at night, and catch sight of native wildlife like turtles in the coral cay to eagles and kangaroos hiding in the nearby bushlands.
Eating out in Karratha
Surprisingly, one of the most popular eating spots in this remote Western Australian seaside town is an Indian restaurant, Bollywood Lounge, a testament to the multicultural spirit of the nation. Try their chicken shawarma and garlic naan. Chicken Treat-Rotisserie specialises in fried chicken dishes as well as classic American burgers and ice-creams. For a classy wine-and-dine affair, Fiorita Wine Bar & Restaurant serves up an exquisite meat and cheese platter paired with a bottle of wine of your choice. And the atmosphere is cosy, warm, and inviting.
