A new settlement (at least in terms of its modern incarnation), the Northern Territory’s Jabiru was built in 1982 to house people living close to the Ranger Uranium Mine on Jabiru East. Completely surrounded by the beautiful Kakadu National Park, it has a population of just over 1000 and it’s the ideal base for exploring the West Arnhem region as well as the park itself. A hub for Aboriginal art and culture, it’s the traditional land of the Mirarr indigenous clan and a worthwhile stop-off for Aussies and others exploring the Top End.
