The largest and the busiest of Tasmania’s airports, Hobart Airport receives nearly two million domestic and international travelers every year looking to experience Tassie’s spectacular natural beauty.

The major airlines servicing Hobart Airport include Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia. They mainly connect the island state of Tasmania with the Australian mainland with direct flights to and from Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. Air New Zealand also runs tri-weekly flights between Tasmania and Auckland in New Zealand.

From Hobart Airport to the Beauty of Tasmania

Australia’s second-oldest capital after Sydney, Hobart may be small but it is mighty when it comes to sharing the country’s beauty. Home to nearly half of all Tasmanians, Hobart is located on the south-eastern tip of the country, along the estuary of River Derwent. Mount kunanyi (also known as Mount Wellington) forms the backdrop of the city. Everywhere you turn in Hobart is a visual treat. And Hobart Airport is your gateway to incredible museums, a strong sailing culture, delicious seafood, and a number of World Heritage-listed sites.

There’s no better way to experience Tasmania than with a car. While sparse public transportation options are available, nothing comes close to the freedom and flexibility of having your own vehicle. There are 8 rental car agencies located at the airport. Look for their offices at the entrance/exit of the one and only terminal or at the larger facility located off Loop Road. The car rental agencies serving Hobart Airport are: Hertz, Avis, Bargain, Budget, Europcar, Redspot, Enterprise, and Thrifty. All of these are reputable and established companies, so you can be assured of a well-maintained rental car.

From large SUVs to rugged off-roaders, you’re bound to find the ideal vehicle for you. If you’re traveling with a large family or group of friends, we recommend renting an SUV or minivan to explore the stunning landscapes of Tasmania. Something like a Chevrolet Tahoe or Nissan Armada would be perfect. Alternatively, if you’re here for a wild adventure and will be spending a lot of time on the off-roads, take a sturdy Toyota Land Cruiser or Ford Ranger with you to handle the rough terrains with ease.

Whatever your needs, we can help you find the right car. Enjoy Travel makes it incredibly easy to find the perfect vehicle for you – just pop your details in the search box, hit the button and you’ll be comparing affordable deals in an instant.

There’s no question that Tasmania is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Hobart Airport will be your gateway to unique and rare native species, breathtaking natural landscapes, a rich history, and some of the cheeriest, friendliest people.

Driving in and around Hobart Airport

As you exit Hobart Airport, hop on Tasman Highway/A3 for a scenic drive to Hobart city center. It should take around 20 minutes.

Alternatively, if you’ve got a bit of time on your hands and you’re ready to get your first taste of Tasmania’s beauty, keep going on Tasman Highway/A3 and keep right until it becomes Davey St/A6. Stay on the road until you reach Pilinger Drive/C616, at which point take right onto Pinnacle Road until you reach kunanyi/Mount Wellington, the crown jewel of the Hobart skyline. The 21-km drive to the summit passes through rainforest and sub-alpine flora before ending with spectacular views of the Tasman Peninsula. Make sure to stop at the Sphinx Rock Lookout on the way. At the mountain, you can hike up to the viewing platform, enjoy a picnic or barbecue, go mountain biking, bushwalking, or even abseiling.

On the way to kunanyi/Mount Wellington, you will pass by several waterfalls. Why not take a quick, refreshing dip in the swimming holes? O’Grady Falls and Silver Falls are both lovely and very close to Hobart city. You’ll need to take a bit of an uphill hike at first but it’ll be worth it when you can swim in the cool pools of fresh alpine water or stand under the waterfall.

Like the rest of Tasmania, the areas surrounding Hobart have a speed limit of 50 km/h on urban roads, 100 km/h on sealed rural roads, and 80 km/h on unsealed rural roads.
