Guide to Devonport
Geography
Originally, Devonport started out as not one but two villages: Torquay and Formby. These villages, which stood at the mouth of the Mersey River, were later brought under a common municipality and designated as parts of the same city. Devonport is now a major port looking out at the Bass Strait.
Climate
Devonport’s climate is of the Mediterranean variety. Summers (December to March) are mildly warm, with temperatures rarely exceeding 24°C. And winters (May to September) are cool but not freezing. Rainfall is present throughout the year but is heaviest during July and August, so bring rain gear.
Things to do in Devonport
Learn about Aboriginal history
At the Tiagarra Aboriginal Culture Centre and Museum, situated just outside Devonport’s city centre, learn about the original tribal inhabitants of northern Tasmania – the Punnilerpanner, Pallitorre, Noeteeler and Plairhekehillerplue. The museum is one of the few cultural venues in Tasmania that is operated entirely by Aboriginal people.
Aye aye captain
Following the colonisation of Australia, Devonport was established as a major trading city on the coast. The Bass Strait Maritime Centre is a great place to learn more about its nautical history. This gallery has plenty of maps, photographs and pieces of sailing equipment for you to examine. It even lets you have a go at sailing on a computer simulator.
Take a step back into nature
Lose yourself in the resplendent verdancy of the Tasmanian Arboretum. This human-grown forest, spread across 66 hectares, has plenty of southern hemisphere conifers and other unique woody plants. It also happens to be a great place to watch platypuses in their natural habitat.
Eating out in Devonport
Mahogany furniture is juxtaposed with lightly-coloured decorations at Mrs Jones Restaurant Bar Lounge, which offers romantic views of the Bass Strait. Be sure to order the curry duck! For something more homely, try Playfish. Their coffee goes really well with the cafe’s impressive book collection. Laneway is another memorable cafe where you can grab breakfast after getting off the Spirit of Tasmania ferry. For spicy delights from India, such as goat curry and Goan vindaloo, eat at SK’s Indian Restaurant.
