Guide to Alice Springs
Known as Mparntwe to its original Arrernte inhabitants, Alice was also called Stuart until 1933, when it was renamed after telegraph trailblazer Sit Charles Todd’s wife, Alice, Lady Todd. There have been human settlements here for at least 30,000 years. European settlement first started in the 1870s, the population increased thanks to a gold strike in 1887 and the European population grew further when trains reached Alice in 1929. Today it’s an interesting location that fuses European and indigenous cultures.
